I have been thinking of picking up a single action .22 revolver for some time now. For those of you that own one, which barrel length did you get? I like the looks of the 5-1/2" barrel models but I feel the 4-3/4" may balance better. Not really interested in any over 5-1/2" or pistols with target type sights.

I don't want to start a debate as to which make of gun to buy. Just opinions regarding barrel lengths.

Cheers.

I have a 6 1/2 that I quite like. Just sayin'.

5.5" balances well and is my favorite. The 4 5/8" revolvers are nice as well but the 5.5 has a nice balanced look and feel....

Which guns are you considering?

I've got Colt's and Rugers and one thing I like on the Colts and the older Rugers is the way the chambers are indexed to line up with the ejector rod. This means you don't have to look down and line up the empties when ejecting. It's not really that big of a deal but I like that I can look around as I'm emptying the gun and only need to look at the gun while loading.
The new 10 shot Rugers have this feature as well but the 6 shot New Model Single Sixes do not.

I like the older Rugers and for that reason I am looking at a new Uberti Stallion (six & ten shot versions).

Going to order myself a Uberti Stallion six shooter with a 4-3/4" barrel :).
Next on the list is a 1911 single stack in 9mm. So many out there........

6.5"
Longer means better accuracy.
More difficult to keep on target than a shorter barrel
but, eventually, better accuracy...........

and if finances allow, I've got my eye on the Ruger single-6 in 9.5"

A longer sighting plane, makes it easier to shoot accurately, but does nothing for the actual mechanical accuracy of the gun. The shortest stiffest barrels will have the greatest mechanical accuracy potential, but would take considerable skill to wring out that last bit of accuracy.

I have a Ruger Single Six (old model) with a 5 1/2 inch barrel ....fixed sights, on a rest it hits where you aim.
My next gun is going to be a 1873 SAA in .45 Colt with a 7 1/2 inch barrel, the longer sight radius has to make it more accurate.
Here is a re-threaded picture of my Ruger:
