I went to the Pembroke open house today and got to try some trap and skeet shooting. I didn't actually do a full round but it was the first time I fired a shotgun and I had a blast. I've already put a down payment on a Mossberg 500 for when my PAL shows up so I will just be using that for now (got it with the 3 barrel combo so I could do a bit of everything with it). However, is there a cheap o/u to keep my eyes open for in the EE forum or even to check out new.

The Pembroke open house was great too, lots of friendly people and got to try out a lot of different firearms.

how cheap you looking for? my old citori is being sold by the current owner and its a great O/U that will last you a life time, its on EE right now its a White Lightning with 26" pipes and is very mint.

As for price, I have no idea. I just know any o/u will be more practical than a pump action. I was looking and saw a few new o/u in the $600 range, I'm not looking to go pro, just want to have some fun. I will probably be waiting for the spring before I purchase one (I'll just use the pump for now and have fun with that)

A $1000 price range will get you a much better built and more reliable gun then one in the $600 range. Mossbergs, stevens, iga's can be hit or miss in quality and have been known to be riddled with problems

Congrats on giving the games a try. If you had enough fun to buy an over under, the stated advice is good, get a bit better quality gun to start, we have two shooters here that learned the hard way!! A good tip is to get one with interchangeable chokes, esp if you are switching between trap and skeet!!

Sounds good, I will probably stick with my Mossberg 500 for now and start saving hopefully in time for next year. Any recommendations on what I should be looking for? What about going with a semi as I noticed they had both semi's and o/u's available to try.

thanks

I shoot an O/U because I don't like crawling around to pick up empties. I agree with everyone above, spend a little more for a good used O/U.

I agree.Watch the EE for a good used O/U, and be aware that the best deals are often found during the winter.

I've been doing a bit of reading up on shotguns for skeet and trap (sticking with my mossberg pump this year for sure regardless). I had mainly been looking at o/u but what about a decent pump? I have read fairly good things about the weatherby SA-08 ($480) or remington 11-87 ($670)

A pump gun is ok, but not really for the trap game. When you graduate to shooting doubles (and you will ;)) the pump is MUCH slower and more difficult to use on the second bird.

The beauty of an O/U is that you can have the first shot choked more open for the closer first bird, and have the second barell choked tighter for the further away bird.

With a pump or semi, you have the same choke for both shots. It may just be
psychological, but I like having the choice of using two different chokes.

In addition, there is one thing less to think about and do (cycle the second round) when you are shooting doubles.

Hope this helps with your decision.

I can attest to the fact that shooting skeet with a pump is hard. Swinging back for the low on 1 and 2 and the high on 6 and 7 is a little awkward and can mess with how smooth you are. I have shot a couple times with a beretta semi and find it worlds better. I have a remington 11-87 premier skeet to try out this week :)

sorry, meant to say semi not pump (already have a pump and thats what I will be using for now). Never really thought about the 2 different chokes on an o/u though.

I shoot a semi-auto shotgun for both trap and skeet (Beretta 390's in both 12 and 20 ga.). If you go to your nearest auto parts store you can purchase a telescoping magnetic tool in order to pick up your empties without bending over.

I'm not worried about having to pick up shells, more worried about performance. Decent o/u's start at around $1000 but something like a weatherby semi is $500
