Mosin Roulette...

Disassembled, Cleaned, Lubricated and ready for the range!

Watching "how to" vids on YouTube showed me how to clean the stock, disassemble the rifle and lubricate properly. Steamed the dirt/cosmo out of the stock (most anyway, didn't want to scrub or soak it too much), cleaned the bore which is shiny and minty fresh. Disassembled, cleaned and lubricated the bolt, now it is pretty smooth. Definitely happy with my $129 purchase from SFRC. Have to go to the range soon...

Pics... cleaned up rather well. I had a spare HG with brass tips, but on a 1943, I felt it appropriate to leave wartime era steel tips. Beautiful bore. The stock is probably off a 1942 though as it's pretty unrefined and huge at the wrist indicating it was only lightly sanded off the duplicator and rushed into service. Still has most original cartouches.

All in all, really not bad for under $150 delivered.

Ex sniper?

The reciever is really smooth for a war time gun

Only thing I can figure is it must be a very late 1943 gun after the war was going well for the Soviets. It's not an ex-sniper unless the plug screws were welded over. No evidence of it having been a PU or PEM that I can see.

I found a Mosin for 100$, looks pretty good, I'll have it next week and I will have a ton of question !

Am I ok to assume that it shoots the same .311 bullet as my Lee Enfields ?

Yup! most Mosins are in and around the .310-.313 range. I find 150gr .311 and .312 rounds to work the best. For the best results slug your bore.

I'm still waiting for my SFRC 91/30 - should be here in a day or two (damn this Canada Post "High Volume" Delay!!!).
I only wish I had ordered a box of SFRC's surplus with it, can't find any 7.62x54R at a decent price around here. I guess I'll have to wait another two weeks until I actually get to shoot it...

Ok I shot mine, shot very good. After about 20 rounds, it really got hot and started sweating out cosmoline, from the upper/lower handguard. Thought I steamed most of it out, but luckily I had some paper towel. I noticed that the rounds fit a little loosely in the internal magazine, unlike the SKS which snap in like lego's. Also, there was some cosmo drip in the breech area. I will have to clean it again. I think this is relatively normal for the first use? The bolt started to stick a couple times due to this. A deep cleaning is needed. Overall was fun, I did shoot some video, so I will post if I have anything usable. My near-sighted eyes didn't like the tiny notch in the rear sight... is there anything to make this more highly visible? Found it difficult.

Also shot a members Marlin 45/70 lever and a double barrel 16g by a gun manufacturer I've never heard of...("N.R. David double barrel 16 gauge, from 1917", he replied) if the footage is good, I'll post it.

It was 36C according to my Jeep, in an indoor range without any filtration, air exchange, we left there soaked in sweat... and deaf after the 45/70 (even though we doubled-up).

Usually you need to do 3 shoots to see the quality of rifle. How good is mosin that you could do 20.
There is ton of tricks on how to clean Mosin. We use special solution from Russia that we get from Russia. It is alcohol base with something else. It does a pretty good job.
There is also break spray, steaming, hot water , windex and etc

Good luck.

Its my experience that the rifle needs to be taken completely apart to remove comsoline from all parts of the rifle using a solvent or spirit based solution. My personal favorite is Ed's Red bore cleaning solvent that you make at home. If the rifle is not completely cleaned, it will leak cosmo every time it gets warm for years to come. This is the same for every surplus rifle, not just Russian Mosins.

In particular to the Mosin, take a large bore brush for .410 shotgun on the end of a small rod in your cordless drill to clean the chamber. Sticky chambers can be a problem for this rifle, and it compounds the matter to be worse when the rifle heats up during use of lacquer coated surplus rounds, but can be any rounds such as commercial brass.

Beat me to it..

The lacquer coated surplus can be a real bugger to work with. I fired my old hungarian M44 with the surplus and it would stick *badly* if you google the "mosin stick bolt" you'll find a lot of info and some solutions. I haven't had any success yet in curing the sticky bolt problem yet. I have zero issues with commercial ammo.

Spin a brush on the end of your cordless drill. Can be a .410 brush, 45 cal, or even a 20gauge brush, ect. Spill some solvent in there and give it a few dozen rotations, followed by a good swab to clean it up. Once its clean, it should be good for a very long time. The problem starts when left over cosmoline in the chamber is mixed with powder residue and heated to become very hard coated.

Lacquer ammo + heat almost always = dirty or sticky bolt syndrome.

Bought one from SFRC a while back, received it last week and took it to the range Monday. Great rifle, 1938 Izhevsk with a Tula extractor and a arsenal force matched magazine bottom. Very nice and shiny bore, stock has a few small imperfections but very nice other than that. Upper handguard seems to be a replacement.
Rifle shot a bit high and to the left by default, upon closer inspection I noticed that the front sight is off its indexing mark - it will likely be right on as far as windage goes once that is corrected.
Magazine floor plate is a bit loose when unloaded, but I had no feeding issues when it was loaded. Gun was absolutely drenched in cosmoline, but after cleaning it, it goes nice and smoothly - absolutely no sticky bolt.

I'm still debating on whether I'll put a scope on it or not - I'll have to wait with that decision until after my MVI, I'm afraid. All in all, a very nice rifle, more than worth the $170 (after shipping & taxes)
