Bob the Bidder eh? Nova Scotia eh? I just had a rifle picked up for me today from near Truro. It is in Colpitts Settlement now and will be in route here tomorrow. First I am looking for some 7X57 to fire in the new rifle.....then?? Do you know "The Crow"? Dave ..

+1 on the SFRC Mosin 1891/30, $129. Was getting ammo anyway, so shipping was combined and cheap. Very nice shiny bore. It is a 1939, not sure what the other markings mean. Stock is shooter grade, will be a project for my first try at refinishing. Some cosmoline to clean as well. Here's a couple pics, what can you tell me about this Mosin I have...

i got a 1942 from westrifle, it shoots well and the rifleing is strong with still a bit of shine left, had to clean it for a solid 12 hours to get all the old crap out of the barrel, not counterbored, original finish still 80% no black paint. nice gun for 135 shipped.
as for accuracy i havn't really tested it on paper but i blew a muskrat about 30 feet in the air from 120 yards so it must be good to go.

That's actually a 1939 Izhevsk M91.30. It has a correct late 1930's era stock with screwed in escutcheons and the finish looks above average. Please do not refinish it. 1939's with minty bores and proper period stocks are uncommon.

$129 from SFRC. Whatever "finish" is on there is peeling/flaking in a couple places, so I was thinking about refinishing. Although after steaming it (leaving it above hot water) it looks shinier but the flaws are more pronounced now. Overall, ok I guess. Claven2, you are saying this is collectable or just rare? I can take more pics of whatever you want, except for the entire serial #. Thanks for the info.
I asked SFRC for "best bore and best stock, don't care what year". This is what they sent me. Bore is nice and shiny, impressed with that. A goop of cosmo in there I have to clean out.
# is 20, did I hit a 17/20 with $10 on the split or $10 straight up on 20? (If you have played Roulette before). Or is it just worth what I paid for it?

I think if the bore is mint and you don't refinish the stock, it is worth a bit more than the run of the mill 91/30 because it has a desireable stock and a nice bore is rare on a pre-war rifle. Maybe worth $150 if cleaned up and sold specifically vice in bulk. If you do anything to the stock, I would limit to a light wipe-down with spirits (not too much or you will melt the shellac) and a light wipe of new shellac over the top. Preferably orange or garnet shellac. Unless it were really bad though, I would leave it as-is.
All mosins in nice shape are collectible, though some are more s than others. Nobody will cry if you bubba the rifle and refinish the stock un-necessarily, but it's not advice likely to be endorsed in this forum full of collectors.
Will find out Wednesday how well it shoots. It's disassembled and ready for cleaning and lubrication. Hopefully YouTube shows me what to do... Not the prettiest stock, the flash and macro photography really exaggerate the flaws, but they are there. Where you slide the metal clamps, there is quite a bit of flaked finish as you can see in the one pic. Naked eye, without flash is when I'm holding it... Would you guys refinish or keep as is?
Welcome to the hobby! You might have to keep on the lookout to find an M44 now.
They were readily available until about a year or two ago, and at least one importer told me that they couldn't find any more sources for them. The US milsurp forums seem to say the same thing.
I'd suggest keeping an eye out on the EE for one, as I'm sure you could find one for a decent price if you try. I paid $139 plus GST and shipping for one of the last batch from Tradeex about one or two years ago, but suspect that you'll be looking at closer to $200 now.
If you see a good Polish example, I would pick that up as they have a better reputation for quality. I can only speak for the one I've got, but it certainly does look better finished than my Russian ones.
That's a major bonus (unless you like that kind of work). I'd still strip and clean, but it would be nice to have the heavy lifting already done.
We'll have threads in 10 years talking about the $110 Mosins, which is equivalent to about $20 in 1970 and $60 in 1990. Forget the "good old days" - they're here now.
Bore is shiny, looks blue due to the LED flashlight, but it is very clean and shiny to the naked eye. Very happy with it. Not the best pic, but as good as I could get with my flashlight.
I would leave that as-is. For a Russian shellac finish, it doesn't get much better than that once the bands have been removed a time or two.
