British Service Pistol

Good pistol, but large uncomfortable grips, and usually comes out of the rack with a stiff long trigger pull (for a single action pistol, definately not suitable for my hands)

Anyone here had trigger time behind a British Service Browning Mk III?
Your first impressions?

I'm attached to a TA unit here in England, and from what they tell me, the only weapon most units have in stores at their armouries are SA80's and SA80 LSW's.

Everything else from Minimi's to GPMG's to pistols is stored centrally and booked out because there aren't enough to go around. Most Sgt's I've met have never even touched a GPMG... kind of sad really.

Anyway, in the odd chance I actually see a pistol, I'll let you know. ;)

Also kind of "telling" as to the state of things there...:(

No kidding... Sad.......

I HATE when governments expect their troops to "defend the country" but do not give them the tools to do so effectively.
It was much the same here in Canada under the liberals.

No kidding.

I was speaking to a fellow soldier, who before deploying a second time to Afghan, told me that the first time he shot an MG with live ammo was while he was under fire in Helmand province.

I sh*t you not.

So you can imagine that pistol experience is somewhat limited here as a secondary arm.

On the bright side, at least they get issued PRR's and NVG sites. :D

Anyway, back on topic, were any British Hi-Power's ever surplused off before that became verboten? If so, how rare are they?

Well, I have a MK III BHP on the way - new stock surplused by either the police or army with the baked on laquer finish, lanyard ring, amb- safety and those ambi plastic grips.

Might not have any acceptance marks on it as it never saw service.

As I recall it doesn't say 'Assembled in Portugal' on it.

I find my HP Practical nice to shoot, but the right side ambi safety broke off halfway up, I think a bad casting. The inside is full of tool marks and I think the finish quality is not much greater than the new norincos, although far fewer sharp edges. the sights are better as well.
I got mine because of my time in the army. Mind you army pistol training in the 80's was the blind leading the blind and I can safely say that I can shoot pistols despite my army training.

I understand that the new BHP's have cast frames. Apparently modern casting processes makes them much more rotund than during formative years. However your note doesn't give me a lot of confidence.

By the way I've been following your blog without knowing it was you that was the author. Small world.

I've handled a few Practicals and always liked them. Mind you all BHP's fit my hand very well. I always seemed to hit what I point these pistols at and have used them in competition. I just don't have any time behind a Mk III.

The new guns are stronger and better than the earlier ones, the design still suffers from the cross bolt (can't remember what it's called) It's still a good gun and would use it to defend my life with. But at the price one is used to better quality nowadays. wish we could get the Detective slide for them....

speaking of blogs, your post on bedding the .303 is excellent!

said something along those lines to my buddies who are in the reserves yet still voted liberal

BHP Fun

I may polish as required but the mag safety will remain in place

I disabled the mag safety on my Mk III, but have not polished the trigger interfaces. Like you; I love how the BHP points, right there with my 1911 9mm single stack STI Spartan. My hand always fit the BHP nicely.

At least back in 1975 with the Westies, we got lots and lots of practice with the BHP's. And then on my JR NCO Crse, I had to do a couple of mutual lessons with the BHP, so it's got a soft spot in my heart! :D

And since I carried one in Nicosia, 1978, I had to own one; even if the trigger is quite heavy! Sight picture; Sight picture is the Mantra! :)

Cheers mates!

I refuse to call the magazine disconnect a safety as it makes the pistol less safe and less user friendly.

IDPA specifies the mag disconnect as a safety device and accordingly will not allow me shoot a sanctioned match with it removed. This annoys me to no end but to be honest practice makes perfect.

It's just a little wierd having to insert a mag to get the hammer down.

By the way I have pics of this pistol now.
Interested in a boo?

Anytime you know of a group or unit that wants, and can get authorization, for some pistol skills instruction just let me know I'm always willing to come out and help.
