Good mountain goat caliber?

thanks for all the info but i want to keep the gun in a short action i think. im kinda leaning towards the .308 in a win model 70.

A hunting partner failed to kill a billy with his 257 Roberts, with at least two hits. It got around the other side of the mountain where I was. Five goats came around, I was about to pick one, when I saw this one lagging behind. I wondered if maybe the 257 didn't kill it, so I shot it, and sure enough, it was the one that was hit.

Two hits where ?

300 win short mag/180 nosler. I've never been on a goat hunt where I didn't run into grizzly, either while on the hunt or packing out meat. I would rather pack the extra pound of rifle up the mountain and have a gun on hand with lots of reach and bone breaking power capability.

What's wrong with StevieK's choice? 7mm 120gr TTSX's have dropped anything with four hoofs and a heartbeat that I've flung them at.

Nothing wrong with virtually everyones choice.
Take your hunting rifle and go. That was why I put so many other things in priority ahead of a rifle, in choosing how to prepare for a goat hunt.
In spite of what so many are saying, there is seldom a reason to take a long shot at a goat.
I have been on several goat hunts where bows and arrows were involved and in every instance we were in the order of 20 to 30 yards from goats. And, as I have stated before, most of my goats were shot with an iron sighted rifle.

Actually, goats are not nearly as hard to kill as they are narrow through the chest.

Once you get the hide off one you will be amazed. They measure less than a foot through the rib cage, even a very big one is flat in cross-section, compared to other animals of the same size. I am convinced that the stories about them being tough to kill come from bullets that are too tough just zipping right on through.

Quick expanding, high velocity, bullets and patience is what you need. They are not skittish animals like sheep, and will give you plenty of opportunity for the best shot. BTDT with a 150 gr bullet at 3000 fps from a 280 Rem.

That 120 in the 7mm-08 will work just fine. Just load some heavier stuff for the trip down with the meat. :)

WOW .... I didn't realize they were that big.

.

I have shot one good billy and a few also rans, they looked much better standing then they did on the ground. Took me a bit to learn what to look for on a big goat, and how to get in position on a big goat, and where you can and cannot recover said goat.

The last one was a very decent goat, one front quarter, and the two hinds (boned) weighed in at 67 1/2 pounds. The meat off the front shoulder blades is roughly 3-4" thick. Its one heck of a slab of meat, it is every bit as thick as the shoulder meat of the last moose I shot here in the koots, we don't have the big northern moose. To bring the cape and all the meat off the mountain my partner and I both had packs over 100 pounds.

To the OP -
Like I said any animal hit well in the heart/lungs will die, but with a goat it is also where it dies. It really doesn't matter if a deer or elk runs 20 yards and tips over, but it does matter if your goat runs 20 yards and then drops...and drops... I would think about where you shoot the goat as much as what you shoot it with. Wait till its in a spot you can recover it from, I have watched 3 other hunters lose 3 goats in the last 2 years from being impatient and shooting where they could not recover the goat. Several will disagree, but waiting for a goat to get on decent terrain and putting one or two through one or both shoulders is my preference.

hey guys, i used to hunt mountain goat and am looking to get back into it, but im not totally sure about what caliber to get. I was thinking something in a short action that is cheap to shoot at the range and good for long shots and can take a goat down. any ideas?

There is no baaaaaad caliber but my goato is the .270

sorry had to do it

I'm no expert, but would venture that a 243, 250AI, 260, 7/08, 270WSM, 7WSM, 7SAUM would be up to the task in a SA. How bout a 25/06, 6.5/06, 270Win, 280 in a LA. Did I miss any? ;)

I'd personally use my 257Roberts and have to learn how to shoot at greater distance than we see here in the East.

.
You forgot 6.5X55:)
