Importing AR-15 from USA

Forgive me if this is common knowledge, but I'm new to black rifles and I've done a search back 6 months and gotten nothing. With our dollar strong and importation services available for $195, I'm interested in importing an AR-15 style rifle from the USA. Something like a Stag Arms or Knights Armament.

My understanding is that if it is marked 5.56, it can't leave the USA, but .223 is kosher. Are there any other American export restrictions - I have read references to flash suppressors being problematic?

Flash suppressors, collapsing or telescoping stocks, marked as 5.56x45mm nato (as well as chambered in 5.56). You can get away with something like a .223 Wylde chamber IIRC (which was a match chamber designed for both .223 rem or 5.56 nato)

Also, keep in mind pretty much ALL import/export companies are going to charge a couple hundred bucks to deal with the paperwork... Its not just a couple forms. Most places charge 200 dollars or more in a lot of cases.

For what you get, its simply not worth it to import a custom one-off gun unless its something valuable and worth it to you.

Arms East (site sponsor up top) carries Stag stuff for a very fair price. 1400-ish for a pretty stock M4 with telescoping stock and a nice muzzle brake, as well as a Troy rear folding site (you can take it off too in the options for 125 less) so if you're not using a rear sight, that's under 1300 bucks.

Check out all the features, that one has a LOT of bang for your buck!

When you look at the price of getting a one-off gun that's importable into Canada, then add the import fee's, you wont be saving any money.

Questar also has an import service, if you really want something from south of the border. They can probably give you more details. Just be ready for a lot of red take from the US Exporting regs.

They are also charging $700.00 plus. I know there are retailers charging far less for import fees.

I'd just get a Stag AR from Arms East or an LMT from Questar. Both have good prices for great rifles, and you'll have them in weeks, not months. Also, don't forget that importing from the U.S., apart from the fees to get a company to do the paperwork for you, there is also taxes and duty on the item. Realistically, if you're even able to find an exportable AR, you'll be able to find an equivalent AR up here for around the same price.

At less than $1300 for a basic LMT from Questar, why would you even want to go through the hassle of importing one?

As far as I can tell, you can get a KAC SR-15 for $2000 south of the border, whereas the (monopoly) Canadian retailer wants $2700 for the same gun. I guess it's "around" the same price, for a loose definition of "around." After the $195 export/import fee, I'd be saving more than $500+HST!

I like to support CGN vendors; Quicken tells me I've spent over $10k with them over the past year. I'm just not sure I'm willing to pay a retailer $500 for what amounts to a bit of export/import work. It's not like they're adding any value, unless there is something special about the guns they are importing, to conform with US export requirements.

Lol, so you don't think you'll be paying duty and taxes at the border?

Exactly...LOL...a lot of new CGNutters want all the dealers to race too the bottom... the prices are fine in regards to imports...and resemble the realities of the economic situation..

Yah, not to mention that you'll likely have to go pick the item up at the border. Plus with items like the SR-15, you'll likely be denied the export permit. I don't think KAC makes export compliant models. OSTS manages to get them into the country because Darren is a wizard. If it was truly as easy as the OP thinks it is, there would be far more people doing it.

I believe the KAC guns are American-made. There shouldn't be any duty because of NAFTA. And I pay HST on all purchases on either side of the border, except I would pay $65 less of it (the tax on the $500 difference) if I import myself, making the Canadian-retailer premium $565.

The importing of U.S. firearms into Canada is a game. All you have to do is jump through the hoops and not get frustrated when a set back occurs. I have done it with an broker and without. The fee that the broker charges makes a lot of frustrations go away. Either way if you do your homework on the firearm you want you can save a piss pot of money over Canadian dealer prices..........

tell us wut u knowwww lol

I'm sorry that you perceive my desire to save money as whiny. Perhaps you are in a much higher socioeconomic stratum than I, and can afford to subsidize the yachts of the oligopolists.

I think some of the words you are using are going over the heads of some of the CGN experts here....LOL. Even though I had to search google for the meanings.....I agree with your statement.

Here's my 2cents..

Imported a Cx4 storm... Paid $600USD plus $50 fee plus pst/gst at the border
Canadian price for the same gun was $1000+ if you could find one.

Imported a Benelli M4 at $1500USD plus $50 fee all in plus gst/pst at the border when Canadian asking price for the same shotgun was $2000 - $2200

I believe the place I used has up'd their fee since, but still... Any gun legally exportable out of the US is available and can certainly be had for le$$ than from a Canadian source.

That said... You must factor in you're travel time... I picked up at the border.
Worth it to me , but may not be a viable option for some

Fees for importing from USA

Wow - $50 is amazing!
Is that place still around and do you remember the name of the place? Even if they've upped their fees it still sounds like it could be an excellent deal. The places I've been checking out are upwards of $200 plus shipping and gst/pst and who knows what other fees. I live near the border so I could pick up.
