cz858 or tapco'd sks?

I wouldn't get an 858 knowing it stands a good chance of getting prohib'd.

I guess we all better stick to 10/22's then. Maybe pellet guns would be safer yet. There isn't a single black/red rifle that isn't on the RCMP's hit list, so you can either run and hide or join the fight.

X2, where do these rumours come from, heck if I thought it would be prohibited I'd run out and buy a few more to have them grandfathered.

There is currently no provision in law for more grandfathered licenses. Most likely you would just lose the rifle, possibly with compensation similar to the T97 debacle. Nothing is getting prohibited or added to the named restricted list without the help of the CPC and that is unlikely. Not impossible, mind you, but unlikely. The best way to ensure that this doesn't happen is to write your MP and let him/her know exactly how you feel about this and that it will be a major blow to party support and donations if the CPC allow the RCMP to pursue this agenda against law abiding citizens.

In that case ... You better not get any guns.

+1.

x2! Absolutely agree with this. I like my Russian SKS but the CZ is a better all around firearm. The tapco stocks, in my experience have been mediocre at best.

Regards,

I have to respectfully disagree. I can certainly see where your coming from but I feel a bit differently about the 2 rifles. To me, the CZ is much lighter, more compact, better balanced and just feels more natural for me on the range. It has several nice features over the SKS that I find beneficial for run an gun type shooting. For plinking, especially off the bench, the SKS is more fun. Again, just constructive disagreement. To the OP, if you've got an SKS already and are thinking of getting something more, dare I say, "assault" like for lack of a better term than I feel the price of the CZ over the SKS is money well spent. For LCF and plain ol plinking, saving some cash on the SKS may be a better idea. Like BJS says, its about half the price of the CZ. The VZ/CZ aftermarket is geared more toward high quality parts for serious shooting while the SKS aftermarket is more cheap junk to accessorize an inexpensive rifle. In the end the CZ will be a natural performer in fast paced run an gun shooting while the tapco'd SKS will be heavier, poorly balanced and more difficult to manipulate. For my kind of shooting the CZ fits.

From what I have read the T97 issue was that RCMP determined the T97 rifle could easily be turned into a full auto rifle which is not the case with the CZ858. There could of course be more to it but a easily converted assault rifle being made full auto without extensive modification seems to be the concern with the T97. The VZ/CZ family of rifles does not have this same concern and has been out a long time compared to how long the T97 rifle was imported for. There's a lot of money tied up in rifles, parts manufacturing, etc. On the slimmmmmm chance they prohibited the rifles for some unknown reason the wisest choice would be how they treated the AK47 when it was made into a class of prohibited. As for "There is currently no provision in law for more grandfathered licenses" This can easily be written into any law especially from a majority government.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_status_of_the_AK-47

In Canada since January 1, 1995, the AK-47 and its variants are prohibited under the Prohibited Weapons Order, No. 13.[1] Exceptions to this are the Valmet Hunter, the Valmet Hunter Auto, and the Valmet M78 rifles which are based on the AK action.[2] This order created a new class of prohibited firearms in Canada (class 12.5). This classification makes the AK and its variants ordinarily illegal for purchase, acquisition, or import. Individuals in Canada who possessed and registered those firearms before January 1, 1995 were "grandfathered" into this class and thus can continue to possess (and under some circumstances acquire) the AK-47 and its variants

Grandfather status is a slap in the face and shouldn't even be discussed.

You are right in saying its a slap in the face but sure better than loosing your rifles. Can't see this coming about given the trouble this would cause within the conservatives base support; just another rumour. And then again this is a forum for discussion so we can discuss what ever a member wishes to take the time to post within reason.

One of my friends fathers was in the Hungarian army several years ago, He was talking about AK47's and said that he wished that he could have had a VZ because everyone knew they were much superior firearms.

Can't get a scope on a SKS without some serious drilling. I did though, put an ATI stock on, a POSP scope with mount and a tapco magazine, well worth the money.
I also have a CZ-858 which has all the nice trimmings, I like them both.

Anyone ever try that B.C. Tactical svount mount with a red dot on a TAPCO stock? If so any pic's on it? As I was thinking about building 1 and wanted to see how it looked & functioned before I started.

Don't count on compensation!

.... Most likely you would just lose the rifle, possibly with compensation similar to the T97 debacle....

Don't count on it. If I remember correctly, according to an NFA publication at the time over $1M dollars worth of firearms were confiscated / turned in without compensation in the '90's under Allan Rock. A good friend of mine lost almost 14K alone.

The T97 issue had compesation because we had a firearm sympathetic party in govt. The LIEberals would not have given a rat's @ss about the RCMP reclassification. They would have smiled at you while saying "Gee that's just too bad."

I had to laugh when your post reminded me what this thread was about... like when you forget what your watching on tv during the commercials. But anyways I think I mentioned b4 that the b.c. tac mount would go good with a tapco'd sks. Even an aimpoint micro sat too high for a cheek weld with the fatter chinese mil. wood stock so a tapco stock should work out well. Well worth the 50 bucks to try anyways, its a good little piece of kit

compensate thousands of VZ58 family (CZ858, CZH2003, FSN, CSA) ? that could run into the multi millions .

The bureaucrats don't care, they are spending your tax money, not their own.

Just imagine what happens if 2500 858 owners all decide to appeal that decision in court. That could account for about 20 years worth of court cases alone. :D

That would be a reasonable response, yes. Again, I don't think the bureaucrats care. This is a jihad with them.

From what I have read the T97 issue was that RCMP determined the T97 rifle could easily be turned into a full auto rifle which is not the case with the CZ858.

Tp prohibit the 858 family it would take an addition to the named prohib list. This would require active CPC participation, which I don't think would happen at this time. Whether they would add in grandfathering provisions is anybody's guess.

I'm not counting on it, I just said it was a possibility. Not having the Libs in power makes it more likely.

In order of preference:

6) a kick in the testicles

7) SKS with Tapco s**t all over it

I see you have your priorities in order.

Good to know some people think it won't be prohib'd - mine's for sale (although it's a CZH2003).

And the wost salesman of the year award goes to....

:HR:

To the OP I own an SKS but have shot an 858. Much better balance on the 858 and a lot lighter. Still not my thing though. For the money I would rather have a Norc AR. Better yet, spend a few bucks more on the new NEA AR when available.

I like the SKS as a good cheap plinker and am happy I saved the money. Otherwise I would be competing with Harble; trying to pawn it off right now. Of course to fund somthing more evil though.;) As far as the SKS is concerned; I'll buy another so my kids don't have to fight over it when I KTB.;)

Edit: None of the advice above applies to "Tapco-F&%^ed" SKS. You will only regret it and end up trying to sell it on the EE for what you put into it.

And the winner is...

Thanks for all the advice, and it is clear to me now to just get the CZ858, I may get another SKS but after reading some other threads I think the only money you should spend on an SKS is for ammo and learn to shoot it well the way it is. Thanks to all.

I would take a regular sks over one with a tapco stock and tapco mag. I do not believe that the plastic stock is as good as the original and the tapco mag is definitely not as good as the original.
