Wikipedia- bless 'em- mentions that on this day in 1944, the Warsaw Uprising began.

It's interesting to look at photos, and ponder all the hardware that was being used... not to mention the heroism of the men and women who rose up against the Nazis on this day.

As an aside, my dad trained as a paratroop with Polish forces under British command. Only recently did I learn that these paratroopers' mandate was in fact to liberate Poland... but instead, a few months later, they'd be deployed during Market Garden.

Had he not passed away 3 years ago, this would have been my dad's 91st birthday. Am thinking of you, wherever you are...
 
Just an urban legend perhaps, but I thought I read somewhere (I know just an internet rumour) that the Uprising started with merely ten handguns.
I guess if the brave handgunner killed a German soldier for his Mauser rifle or MP 40, and got away with it and some ammunition alive, this could be believeable.

Edit: Hats off to your father nntw, anyone that survived WW2 as an allied paratrooper deserves our respect and admiration.

My great uncle was a Polish Partisan during the war. He and his fellow partisans would capture Russian and German armaments and hide them at my Grandmother's farm. They would burry them in the yard packed in grease. He and a few buds missed the uprising because he was held up by the Russians outside of Warsaw. They were to smuggle arms into Warsaw for the uprising. By the time they got to the farm the uprising was almost over, and they feared crossing back over the Russian front with a trailer full of armaments.

He mentioned his Partisan life started when someone passed him a guide liberator and told him to get his own gun, which traded up for a MP40.

Somewhere by a farmhouse outside Lwow is a ton of live MG's and ammo for someone to trip over. My father always wished the farm was in Poland so he could have some fun playing archiologist :)

My Grandmother recalled that she helped bury at least 30-40 guns. One she recalled was a machinegun that had a plate on top of it (DP-28), but most were German ones.

Anyway, I guess this may add creedence to the fact that the uprising started with a few handguns.
 
Funny, My grandparents also came from Lvov, but they arrived at Ellis Island around 1900.
One Grandfather was working on a farm in germany. The farmer gave him two choices, marry his daughter, or he would get him drafted into the Kaisers army. He chose neither, walked to Hamburg, and got on a boat!

The Warsaw uprising was an amazing occurance. The Poles had lots of weapons when the uprising started - they even managed to manufacture their own original submachine gun.

First heard of these when I read an in depth article about them in the now defunct British publication Guns Review. It is interesting that an air dropped Sten Mk. II was supplied by the Home Army for study purposes, but the designers created a much more sophisticated gun. In addition to the Lightning, a significant quantity of Sten copies were manufactured. Production of many of these was on a series basis - the guns were not just cobbled together one-offs. Given the conditions of the German occupation of Poland, the individuals involved were exceptionally courageous.

Extremely brave! Especially after the Nazis showed the world what happens to folks who assist the partisans. This picture shows the hanging of workers at the Radom plant who smuggled parts for the resistance (click on it if you like).

Cool story Stoggie! The Warsaw uprising is one of those inspiring, yet tragic stories that display humanities best and worst. How a big budget movie hasn't been made about it is beyond me, it's a great story with a plot that wouldn't seem real if it came from a writers pen, instead of a history book!

Well it says alot about the Kaminski brigade when their main focus became looting and raping in the warsaw ghetto as opposed to military action. Dirlewanger was another scumbag.
 
Even comments from regular officers in the Wehrmacht in WW2 show that the SS was filled with "criminal types" as the Prussian aristocracy called them. The Warsaw uprising had a sad outcome as the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto were left "swinging in the breeze" by the Allies and the Polish resistance for the most part. The Nazis exacted a horrible revenge for the uprising.
