I've been thinking of getting my first semi auto shotgun to use for trap, turkey and maybe geese in the future. I was 90% sure of getting a browning maxus in 3" camo until I saw the beretta extreme 2 in camo 3 1/2" come on sale for only $30 more. Cycling the light trap loads is more important to me than having the 3 1/2" for geese. I know little about the beretta's and its gas system. Is it a better gun for the extra $30 or should I stick with the 3" browning?

Go Binelli before the beretta urika II. I had one that jamed up in the rain. Beretta gave me another that did the same. Traded it for an Extrema, and it to wouldn't cycle in rainy conditions.
I now have a Benelli Black Eagle that works in all conditions, and a Beretta Pintail that does the same.
What really pizzed me off was my $1500+ shotguns jamed up in the rain while two guys I hunt with had no problems with their $499 Biakals.
The OP wanted it for Trap too. That's where the Benelli looses out. The 3 1/2 inch Benelli"s do not handle "Trap Loads" as well as their 3" Cousins. The Beretta would be a better choice for 2 3/4 loads. And a lot softer shooting too.
Is the maxus 3" a bad choice? I can get it for almost $300 less than the urika.

An excellent approach. I would recommend that you also physically handle both brands to determine gun fit and other preferences (features etc) prior to a decision.
Both brands do come with shims for adjusting fit. However, IMHO, one still ought to personally inspect/shoulder the firearms to get the proper "feel" for the right one.
In view of the fact that clay shooting will be one of your objectives - you may note that Beretta semi-autos are far more dominant at the ranges than any other brand(s) of semi - a major reason for that is the Beretta semi's ability to efficiently cycle very light loads more particularly in the 3inch chambered shotguns.
Browning makes a good semi shotgun. I had owned a Gold Hunter in 20ga which was very well constructed/finished. However, if I were to acquire a "do-it-all" type of semi (frankly, I don't care much for semis
) I'd get the Beretta.
I know this is nit the Beretta or the Maxus but i have a Browning Silver Hunter in 3" and it handles 1oz 2 3/4 to 3" mags no problem. mine hasn't had the guts shot out of it yet but I've had no problems with ease of maintaining the gun and and have seen a young fella locally bust his up pretty good. try it as an option. i believe they ara a bit less costly than the others as well
Two of our trap and skeet club members are using the Maxus. One 3-1/2" model went over a full year without being cleaned, and it still functions just fine with trap and skeet loads. The other one is a 3" model that only has 500 rounds or so through it, but it too has never malfunctioned, even with 2-3/4 dram target loads.
The silver was originally the one I was getting after trying a friends. But they don't make a 3" in camo and I dont want to trudge around in the muck with that pretty wood stock and silver finish... beautiful gun.
