Help with marlin 30as 30-30

Ive got a marlin 30as which came to me in bits with the bolt and lever removed. I had a real problem putting it back together. The lever wouldnt sit in the correct place. I then noticed the screw on the left side of the receiver just above the lever pivot screw was sticking out inside the receiver stopping the lever going in the right place.
I backed this screw off a few turns and it all went together perfect. And seems to all be working correctly. But if I retighten the screw it locks the lever solid.

So my question is what to do? Did the previous owner put the wrong screw in place? Or is it normal to have it slightly loosened (I doubt this)

I have the same rifle. I would take it apart completely, then you can inspect all the parts and be sure it was reassembled properly.

I seem to recall that it's possible to swap a pair of screws on that rifle, one of which is longer and will bind the lever as you've experienced.

I can't remember which one it is but I'll bet you can find it.

i think you've got it. the screw at the front of the bottom of the receiver is the same but a little shorter. so i swapped them and it all seems good now..

Be sure that screw at the front of the bottom of the receiver is
"goodantight" If not, when you try to lever in a new round, it will
only go about half-way, then bind up. Then you have to remove
the lever screw, pull out the lever, and then all the rounds in the
mag tube squirt out all over the place, causing much foul language.

Congrats on getting a great rifle, btw.

thanks. i must have done it up well enough as it seems to be functioning perfectly.

I put a receiver sight on one I got and since then I can't remove the bolt for cleaning as one of the mounting screws is a hair too long. Rifle functions fine but I don't want to take the sight off for cleaning as it will throw the sighting all wonky again.

Oh well. I don't like cleaning rifles any more anyway.

I was a little afraid of pulling my Marlin apart to clean/fix it.
A bit of reading and youtubing gave me the basics.
Once into it, it all made sense. In today's world, where the
biggest engineering accomplishment is getting the 13th
cupholder into a 2 seater car, the Marlin is a refreshing
breath of air. Simple, robust, and nothing that doesn't need
to be there. Except for the cross-bolt safety on the newer ones...
