Classic cartridges in the field

Is it? I thought the M-S was a little shorter (case) than the Mauser version - and also a small difference in head diameter (?). I will grab some of my old factory 8x56 MS ammo and measure it.

The 9.5x57 MS and 9.3x57 do differ slightly (in bullet diameter and case length) and I think the confusion arose when people were using Mauser cases to form 9.5x57 MS (or .375 Rimless NE for British colonies) when it became more scarce. Other confusion between the two could be because the performance was nearly identical.

I regularly hunt with a Winchester P14 .303 Brit, Gewehrfabrik Danzig small-ring M98 sporting Mauser 8x57 with double set triggers built in 1919, Gustav Genschow & Co large-ring M98 sporting Mauser 9.3x62 with flip sights from the 1920s and a Savage 99F take-down in 300 Savage from 1924.
I've bought so many new rifles but I just can't seem to keep these particular ones in the safe. The cartridges work way too well and the craftsmanship is superb. They just handle and shoot way to nicely to not use them on game. Oh yeah, and not having a bulky scope on the receiver sure is nice for pushing through the bush.

This year I am going to be using my paper patched cast bullets in my Ruger 303. Three months of trials and tests but I am now getting decent accuracy with soft lead bullets and full power loads. Probably over kill for the little island deer.

The 250 Savage will go out for Whitetail this fall again.

Suspect my wife will take the 7x57 if she gets an Elk tag, no surprise there .

The 30-40 from 1901 is loaded up with 180gr KKSPs and the 06 of `56 with 200gr KKSPs to chase the Wapiti in the high country.

Nugget is bringing his 721 30 Super for the Elk trip but he will have a deer tag, and if he gets his antelope tag that same rifle will get the nod, although rumors have gone around he will take his 25 Remington for back up. It's been needed before!

There is a recurring theme here with all small stuff getting toppled. Hoping this fall reveals some bigger animals. Kristian, you should know better than to ask for pics.:p
We were looking for a 32 Special or 303 savage for this fall but that is not working in our favor yet.cou:

I knew you'd come through Noel!

BTW, the place that has the 1899 also has a Super Sporter in 250-3000, just like yours - sans magazine (which I understand are getting quite scarce).

Since I still have some elk meat in the freezer I will take a gun that I don't want to get dirty, is to heavy to lug around, can't make "long shots" and is generally inappropriate. That way I won't actually be able to shoot anything even if I see it,, thus maintaining the perfect freezer level.
-470 NE for me this year.

Going to take the pre-64 Model 70 fwt in 270 Win out for sheep. I do just about all my varminting with a pre-64 in 220 Swift. I've taken a lot of game including a caribou and a goat last season with my pre-64 300 H&H and it will get used for moose this year, or maybe the 375 H&H.

Just for clarity - 1899 - when I said the 9.5x56 MS "was the same as 9.3 x 57" I didnt mean they were identical rounds - merely nice vintage cartridges that perform similarily and very well.

Not sure if the .308 is classic enough, but I always seems to migrate back to it, and this fall will be no different. :D

My non-classic used will be my custom .260, and the .50ML might get some action.

I'll be using my Savage in .308 and .30-30 Marlin. Next year I was thinking of using my CZ-858 as a brush gun. Does 7.62x39 count as a classic cartridge as it's been in production since 1943?

Looking like its going to be 25-06 for Whitetail deer and the 300WM for Moose

However I have a Muley Buck draw on some farm land and a hankering to wack something with my Martini Henry 577/450 :D 405grn bullet moving at +1500fps should do the job :D
