Bulk buying power?

Buying bulk is the way to go, not just for cost but for the fact that lately some componants can be hard to find on a regular basis. Lately you can hardly find the same brand twice in a row, and that sometimes means fiddling with your loads. It's also best to source locally when you can. Shipping can kill any cost savings you may have made (I just bought 2k 45acp bullets at 65lbs, you really don't want to pay shipping). Same thing with powder and primers. They can't be sent via mail so they get sent via freight. Sometimes you just can't do it, but local is the best way to go.

That is the advantage of belonging to a club or knowing a group of shooters. Many suppliers offer a discount or free shipping if a minimum amount of components is purchased.
We do it all the time, especially here on Vancouver Island where we get hosed by the local sporting goods shops.

"...Better to buy local or online?..." Buy components locally. Like dogzilla says, shipping costs will negate any cost savings found on-line.
Don't buy anything but primers(box of 1,000 is normal) in bulk until you have worked up a load. Then you can buy an 8 pound keg of whatever powder and bullets in any quantity you want. Just be prepared to have to order it, pay up front and pick it up quickly. Has to do with the stupid rules dealers have to comply with regarding the amount of powder they can have in the shop without having a powder magazine. An 8 lb keg won't be cheap, but you'll have the same powder lot for a long time.
