Wasn't saying there's not a difference, just that "5.56" reloading dies don't, to my knowledge, seem to exist.
 
NATO head stamped 5.56 is garbage ammo. You get excited with a 2" group at 100m.

If you want to make your own load a 63gn FMJBT to pretty much right at 3000 fps.

My AR is a 1/7 twist so it will stabalize the heavy bullets.

i would prefer the hevey bullets in the 5.56 to have the extra velocety for those hevier bullets

Yikes.... Don't compare AE to MFS or WWB then! The AE feels alot hotter "in the shoulder" then others I have tried...

TSE Calgary has sold 5.56 in the past, might want to try them if looking for the genuine FMJ 5.56 tungsten penetrator goodness for the evil communist black outline at your local dirt backstop.

Or get a set of 5.56 dies and turn .223 brass into 5.56

Or get a wilde chamber

Or just be happy with readily available .223. :)
 
So are there velocity numbers using the same bullet weights to back up this "hotter "in the shoulder"" feeling? Genuinely curious, I don't know the answer to that one.

The biggest difference, the most important and notable one between 5.56 military ammunition and .223 civillian ammunition, is the cases are thicker for the military stuff. Also the primers are likely crimped. The thicker case, though it would support higher pressure, also calls for a reduction in powder capacity.
