Has anyone tried free floating their barrel using a ducktape shim at the front of their receiver to lift the front end up slightly, effectively freefloating the barrel?

yes, red greene did once. can't remember the episode.

This has to be the answer of the week. Well played, sir.

OP, I would suggest something like thin wood or cardstock (ie - old business cards) shims instead of duct tape. The tape is soft and will flow away from contact points under the pressure of the action screws being tightened.

Get a feeler gauge and cut the pieces you need, or go to the hardware store and buy some shim stock, or a large feeler gauge in one size and cut what you need.

If you duct tape it, it may work but you'll wish you did something better later on.

I just had to do this on an old Cooey 39 stock and the best thing to do is get a dowell and sand the barrel groove away as was suggested.

Use leather, nothing else, no vibration transfer at all. Rubber may weather better but leather works better. The glue on duct tape will move and seep and cause nothing but grief as no two shots will be consistent with all the movement.
