Its likely been posted here before but anyways,Iam going on the Moose hunt for the first time in 25 yrs in Area 54 and looking to purchase a inexpensive rifle to do the job. Thanks for the replys. Samson

Marlin XS-7 is a good budget bolt action rifle, and all you need in WMU 54 is a .308.

7600, Win 88, savage 99, BLR, if you don't want a bolt action.

Savage edge only comes in 30 06 and less no 300. Lebarons had them for 297. Also pick a cheap packaged deal at basspro for 500 bucks or at wholesale sports or cabelas. Marlin is cheap for 400 bucks at wholesale sports. Best gun under 400 bucks.

A 30-30 leaver with 170gr FP's keep shots under 100yds......there are a bunch in the EE for reasonable prices.

That's what I've been telling him as he's hunting in our camp.I think all he's realy doing is making an excuse to the old girl that he needs to buy another rifle !!!

In that case you most certainly need a bigger rifle...A 375 Ruger perhaps? Could sell you mine!

In Ontario, you don't need anything bigger then a .270.

True...I use a 25-06 for everything I hunt here.

Moose gun

Thanks for all the replys.Looks like the best I could have would be a bolt action in 30-06.I will do my shopping on CGN and maybe the old girl may not notice another pcs in the house.Samson

Take a look at the TC venture in 30-06. I dont know how "inexpensive your looking for but Cabelas has them for $549. I think its a pretty good price for what you get. I had the pleasure of handling one back in the spring and was impressed, worth a look anyway.

I wouldn't recommend a magnum for hunting moose - they're often more trouble than they're worth.

Of the chamberings I own, or have owned, I'd recommend:

7X57,
.308,
.300 Savage,
30-06,
.303 British,
8X57,
.356 Win.,
.358 Win.,
.35 Whelen,
.444 Marlin, and
45/70
