problem coyotes

A farmer had a day old calf killed by coyotes and got a hold of me to see we could shoot any.Had the first coyote come to the call after about 30 min, stopped him about 90 yds out and shot with 222 40 gr v-max drt.The next yote came about another 30 min into calling and came in down wind, 1st black one, stopped him at about 130 yds and shot him drt.The third coyote and the second black one came from upwind and started his circle down wind but had to cross a ridge at about 160 yds right in front of me.I stopped him on the ridge and made the shot, a very good night of calling and we made a farmer very happy

Pardon my ignorance - but have never encountered a black coyote here in Alberta. Are they cross bred with dogs or do they occur that way?

Good job on you to help a farmer out like that too - I am sure he appreciated it immensely.
 
@Norskie,

We have them here in Alberta I worked for a ranch near Calgary and saw the odd one not quite as black more of a dark charcoal color. Never got to shoot one but they are bigger than most of their lighter grey counterparts so they might be crossbred with a dog.

Nope Pure blood Coyotes are grey they are not black the black phase comes from crossbreeding with either a domestic dog or wolf it can also come from years of inbreeding. The black or white phase colors from inbreeding will only happen if populations are low forcing yotes to inbreed to sustain the population which I believe is not the case here. This only leaves the possibility of breeding with a domestic dog or Wolf as there is no gene in a pure coyote which will change its color phasing.

I'm not a biologist, but other than color, they look nothing like the eastern wolves around here. :D

I called them eastern wolves but I should have said Eastern Coyote's, Coydogs, Coy-Wolf hybrid or Tweed Wolves.

Sorry for the confusion :D

I have a coyote problem on our farm as well are you calling and hunting at night? and should i use bait to try to lure the yotesa out during the daylight?
 
Super rare to see them that black in Alberta, let alone two dead in one stand. Would have been nice to get them in the winter and have better furs.

Soooo where exactly did he say Alberta. Lived here all my life and never seen a black Coyote, seen some pretty pale almost white ones but never a black.
As well as Hunting at night? I realize that preditor control in AB is not hunting when on private land but pretty sure discharging a firearm in AB after dark is a no no.

He didnt say Alberta. I was making a statement regarding the rarity of a black coyote in Alberta. I dont know where he shot them but I think the question has already been asked. As for everything else you have pointed out, I agree with you. :agree:
