I called them eastern wolves but I should have said Eastern Coyote's, Coydogs, Coy-Wolf hybrid or Tweed Wolves. Sorry for the confusion![]()
The black colour can also be a result of melanism in 'pure blood' coyotes (though I use your term loosely) as well as interbreeding with melanistic red wolves and domestic/wild dogs. There was some research on the topic in the 1950s. It occurs more often in eastern coyotes, that's true, and tends to be more common in the southeastern USA than anywhere else.
