300 win.mag - suggestions for inexpensive moose rifle?

Looking for some advice. I am looking for a 300 win mag moose/elk rifle. Don't want to break the bank, but want something fairly light and that can do 300 yard shots (hunting only really). I own a savage 111 FCXP3 in 270 win and love it for what i paid (put a different scope on it though), but wondered what some of you think is a good inexpensive rifle in this caliber? The savage has a 24" barrel and the remington SPS DM has a 26" i believe.

Get a nice Zastava 300 win mag from Trade ex up above in the sponsors. Some nice wood stocks. And they are a true mauser 98 action , hammer forged barrel, brand new, for less than 500 bucks. I'm getting one in 7mm RM, and 30-06 within the next month or so. They are great to deal with too. Fast and professional. Just my suggestion. Mauser 98 scope bases are easy to find. These are good, rugged, guns, and if you want synthetic , you can get them for 50 bucks LESS
 
Suggest you buy a Stevens 200 in 300win mag new if you want for about 400 all taxes in. Then use your fcxp stock as your platform. Remove the mag from the stevens and swap with the 270 detach mag. Sell your stevens stock for $40 and put the money towards a timney which can be used for both actioned barrels.

Now you have a swap gun for all your future needs. I love the modular designs savage provides and how readily you can make such platforms work. How is that for reasonable chocabloc. Enjoy.
 
All of the above options will kill moose and fit in your price range. You mention you want a lightweight gun, I would just caution that a little extra weight can be nice in a 300 mag, as the recoil can be pretty stiff in a light synthetic stocked gun.
 
You really won't gain much, practically speaking, on moose going from .270 with good bullets to .300 WM. That is just my opinion, but if you would just like a new rifle then, as has been mentioned, check out the Vanguard. It can be had for under $500 + tax.

Your 270 would be a perfect 300yd moose rifle as well. Just sayin'. ;)

I see some Stevens 200's....new...269.99 plus the standard frills...only the larger ones left...270, 30-06, 7mm RM and 300WM...they're at our "dealer" in McAdam NB.;)

Here is a good suggestion. TC Venture in 300 win or 7mm mag. Call lebarons in mississauga or markam and see if them have them in stock. Right now they are list for 436 on there site. Can not beat that gun for that price. That is what I would buy for a cheap, accurate 300.

I used to frequent the Miss, store when living in Toronto; the customer service absolutely stunk especially in the gun shop.

Maybe Savage can produce a gun in conjunction with Lego. Seems appropriately cheesy. :D
 
I second the opinion about the service at the Lebaron's in Mississauga. The guys there are the least friendly and the most surly I have ever encountered at a gun shop (and that is saying something). It's like you are really inconveniencing them by having the audacity of attempting to be a customer. Like the Soup Nazi in Seinfeld..."No gun for you!". The ones at the Markham Lebaron's, on the other hand, are fine.
 
Thanks. What do you mean by good bullets? I switched to 150 grain in the winchester supreme (elite?) Bonded bullet. Is that what you mean? Or specialty ammo? Recommend? I just want to make sure I have some reasonable knockdown power out to 300 yards. It seems that energy is low at that range. Suggestions?

That would be my choice. FWIW, a lightweight 300 win mag can be a bit of a beast with recoil, I had one that weighed 6 lbs 10 oz before scope, used it for a year Ok but sold it and bought a used Sako Av that was about 3/4 of a pound more.
