hey guys im new to the hunting world and will be going for the first time in october. my problem is i dont know what to get. The guys in my hunting group say 7mm mag is the best choice. But most of the reasearch i've done online says a .308 should do fine. we'll be going after moose and deer in the interior of B.C.
I know that range and shot placement are large factors to consider.

Also if i do end up going with a magnum would 7mm or .300 win mag be a better choice. thanks

get a rifle that fits you and you can shoot well.being new to hunting a big magnum rifle and the recoil they produce could cause you to miss or worse yet make a bad hit.something in 270/308/30-06 should be all you will ever need.

Get a rifle quick so you can practice lots before the season. Get a 270/308/30-06 in a savage package and use this until you learn the basics. Then after a few seasons of experience and lots practice shooting move on up to a magnum calibre or some other rare calibre. The next firearm will be more money and more expensive to shoot, but you will always come back to the savage package to practice. Right now you need something not too costly to shoot. You do not need a magnum or something rare to kill anything in North America, although they are more fun:).

A .308 would be great. It's got a bit less recoil than the .30-06. A 7-08 would be perfection. :D It's got even a bit less recoil than the .308, but still has all the smackdown that the .308 offers. I think it would be ideal for the needs that you've described... ;)

When I think interior BC I think close shots in the bush and medium shots in a cutblock. This is not 7mm RM territory. You would be far better served with a .308 or .30-06.

If the country you are hunting in is open then a 7mm is a great choice. The 7mm RM really shines with open country and long shots, where it's excellent ballistics make it a stand out. In the bush it just leads to wasted meat.

If it were me, I'd go for the 30-06. Everything the 308 can shoot, the 30-06 can do a wee bit better.

My load for moose is a 165 gr Nosler partition. It is available commercially too.

Deer, well that'd be a 150 gr. Black Bear, well again, that'd be a 180 gr sp. The 30-06 has it covered.

Get a nice Savage or Weatherby Vanguard (put reasonable glass on it) and happy hunting. Make sure the gun fits you.

I have a 308 in a vanguard and M14. It is a good round, but does not top the 30-06.

.308 gets my vote. Savage and Tikka make nice, affordable, quality guns. Remember to budget for a set of quality rings and a quality scope unless you plan on shooting irons. As a new shooter I would stay away from the 300 Magnum.

At some point you will also want to get a pair of quality binos. Don't skimp here.
