SKS hunter project

Nice work! How does it shoot?
A smaller scope or red dot and maybe a minor trim or the barrel and that would be a pretty good bush gun!

punishing recoil of the SKS??

When I hear stuff like this, its hard to validate an opinion or anything in this post to be worth a read. Further to this, you can Frankenstein a SKS what ever way you want, but the bullet still runs out of energy at just over 100 yards. Why does anyone need a scope for that?

It might be cool if you still live in your Mom's basement, but its an embarrassment to real hunters and shooters.

7.62x39 runs out of energy after 100 yards?

Wow, good to now. I learned something today. :D

your rifle looks great. there is a great easy mod to get rid of the shell deflector. good for you on buying the choate mount probably the best sks mount going. have a good hunt

Actually the 7.62 x 39 is roughly the same as the 30-30 Round and i have heard situations that people have brought down Deer out to 200 yards with an SKS....mind you i don't think i would try it...:D

Thanks for the feed back fiddler but if it's all the same to you i will take that as your way of being funny. Oh and FYI, I own my basement.

Totally with you on that one

I reckon you should make a nice monte carlo walnut stock and hand guard for it. Would look pretty slick

I am totally with you on that one but that is a level of wood working skill that i think is beyond me at this point. Anything like that aftermarket? Or will it be a few years waiting?

Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone for your positive feed back on my project. I will be sure to post range results on my next trip to the range on the week after next.

Yes there is a Timbersmith model. Not a montecarlo, but a thumbhole targety type. You'd probe best be of carving your own, or having one made for you. But, hiring someone out is bucu $$$

VERY nice job!!! Kudos to you sir. I ran into the same problem trying to remove the whole front sight assembly, so I settled for just removing the bayonet & cleaning rod fittings. I cut it off with a dremel, filed it flat & reblued. It gives me the option of going to open sights if need be. I fabricated my own scope mount, and with a short scope, I don't need to worry about a shell defector. I bought it off a fellow CGN'er with the ATI dragunov style stock, so I didn't have to do any stock mods at all. I'm in the process of fabricating another mount with a longer nose so it will be a mount/shell defector in one, and allow me to put on better glass. Bear in mind, I'm doing this on the cheap cheap. Giiven what it cost me, I'm not willing to put any serious money into it. We WILL see some pics of it's performance, will we not? Once again, nice work indeed. Check out the pics of my shoestring budget hunter.

Nice job on your Dragunov stock hunter. How does the pistol grip feel? As in how does the reach with your trigger finger feel. I am playing with an old SKS wood stock that i have left over from other projects where i put synthetic stocks on. I have a threaded rod set into the stock and in the process of shaping a pistol grip for it. We'll see how it turns out!

I did the same thing you did with the bayonet lug on one of my other SKS when i changed it over to an ATI montecarlo stock. Pretty happy with the result on that one too. The MC stock is really comfortable. The only complaint is that i had to glass bed it to make it fit snugly.

Many years ago there was an article in a New Zealand gun mag where a guy made a stock for his Russian SKS out of Beech. It turned out really nice. Had extensive bedding and an adjustable cheek piece. I don't know of any aftermarket wood stocks for the SKS. Maybe Boyds will cough up something in the future??

You didn't know that!? I barely make it through paper at that kind of distance...lol

OP, good job on your SKS, I really like the look of the barrel.

Dude, you've shot a 7.62x39? I heard they were all illegal because 7.62x39 is armor piercing and armor piercing ammo is ILLEGAL in Canada.

:D
