Rifle storage @ camp

What does everyone do for rifle storage at camp? (deer/moose whatever)

Up until now I haven't given it much thought but I recently read that when it is cold outside you should store the guns outside to eliminate any hot/cold condensation/corrosion/action freezing problems etc...

I don't know how this would work with storage laws etc... share your thoughts!

FWIW - I have hunted 2 years now (deer) - last year with a Marlin 336 blued/wood 30-30 & stored it inside. Wasn't very cold (right around freezing and up to +5 or so in the afternoon) and didn't have any issues - hoping for colder weather & more snow this year!

When I was in the Army, it didn't matter to us during spring/summer/fall, we had to have the rifle by our side, when in the field.

HOWEVER, during winter exercises, where temperatures were typically -25 to -50, they would not be kept in the tent or indoors during an exercise, for the reasons you listed. It actually didn't eliminate all problems, but reduced the overall potential for problems.

Come morning/sun-up, take the mag out, open the action, check the chamber, and bore for obstructions, ensure the action works as intended (safety works, hammer falls on a trigger pull, that sort of thing), inspect for corrosion, put a different round at the ready.

We make sure when we backpack into a hunt area we bring along a 50lb logging chain or anchor where there are no trees. Really.:p
 
We don't have vehicle access into our camp and it is fairly cold when we go in (never above zero), so we leave them outside in the gunboots on the bikes overnight.

Yes...Really
In the hunting camp, there in use not storage.

No legal need for a lock on the rack.
 
In our wall tent, with have a bunk setup in one corner where the rifles sit foe the night. I-myself wipe my entire rifle/scope off with a soft, dry cloth then wipe down with a silicon cloth. Most of us leave the bolts open.

Camp guns are a 30-30 and a Mossberg 500 pistol grip with Ghost ring sights and loaded with alternating slug/buckshot/slug/buckshot incase we have a bear wonder into camp/tent.
 
For Fck Sakes... do we really need to worry about it? The SWAT team coming into your deer camp on a report of unsafe storage?

Live your life and store you gun as safe as you feel it needs to be.

Keep it lubed, clean and dry and you're good.

That philosophy might work for you, but there are Conservation Officers with a stick in the posterior.

Here's a scenario: In camp, could I sleep with an unloaded, unlocked firearm in the same place there are unlicensed individuals? The Unlicensed are my buddy who passed his tests but doesnt have the PAL yet, and my dad.

In Ontario, would this firearm need to be encased? (bear season is open)

I know this has got to be bugging people, but I don't see how you can reconcile this with
If you are in an area usually inhabited by wildlife, during the period from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise, you must unload and encase firearms (including air gun, pellet gun, bow or crossbow) in your possession. Firearms must be securely encased in a manner whereby they are not readily accessible.

I realize not everyone is in Ontario, but for those that are, are you saying your firearm is in use while it is encased?
 
usually bring it in the cabin, unloaded, no trigger locks or such. Hunting on private propery = security. To and from the camp, trigger locks etc. In the middle of no-where, who gives a crap ?

If its freezing out x 2 with the comment above, winter/ arctic in the army, no weapons in the tent etc. It'll swea then freeze when you go outside again. IF its really cold, leave it outside the door or, if worried about security, place them in a locked vehicle.
