It depends on the rifle's use

  • 260 is the modern day 6.55x55 Swedish, one of the best target cartridge
  • 7mm-08 is the modern day 7mm Mauser, one of the best hunting cartridge

The true difference are specific bullets:
  • 7mm 160 Accubond is superior to 6.5 140 Nosler Accubond (large game hunting)
  • 6.5mm 142 Sierra Matchking is superios to 7mm 162 Hornady A-Max (target)

Which is best depends of your rifle's use:
if you're a hunter get a 7mm-08, if you're a shooter get a 260.

If you want to beat the 160gr NAB for hunting with a .260, just use a 6.5mm 130 or 140gr TTSX bullet.:p

BULL s**t, from one Mb'n to another one!

Easy now fella. ;). I was only funnin a couple of the posters before me. Archie james because he's contacted me 2 or 3 times to see if I'd sell him my 260 and bartell because he sold me my 260. The reality of it is there is no significant difference, other than perhaps more options in currently being produced rifles in 7-08 than the 260. Not many factory made 260's to choose from if you don't want to go the custom route. That to me is the biggest difference.

Twas only pulling your P'er, man! lol! got both, the one 260 and three 7mm-08's, love them all dearly, seems a slight bit less recoil from the 260, though! Both are just simpley awesome cals! So, what part of Mb do you FoMoCo the mud in? we used to go to Pine Falls for the grand show, but never hear of the event being advertised anymore! Sure do miss it!

nobody loads 160's in a 7-08. It's 120-140s for the most part. You could shoot ten moose with a 260 loaded with a premium 120-140gr bullet and ten with a 7-08 loaded with a premium 120-140gr bullet and all you'll have is a ####load of moose meat in the freezer

260 has a better selection of 85-100gr varmint bullets and a slew of sleek target bullets for long range paper punching. 7-08 is a good cartridge but the 260 does it better

Let me rephrase my point:
Which cartridge is the best hunting cartridge 7mm Mauser or 6.5x55 Swedish?
Which cartridge is the best target cartridge 6.5x66 Swedish or 7mm Mauser?

I think that the answer is obvious (when stated in such a biased way)

Seriously??

Neither one is really sufficient to down N.American game with any efficiency.

Next is gonna be 22-250 vs .223 as a big game cartridge, time to grow up boys and not be so fearful of a little tap in the shoulder.

I just like 7mm rifles. I have a number of 7X57s but the actions are longer and heavier than my SA Remington 700 BDL in 7-08. Easy to make 7-08 ammo out of 308 casings.
Just my preference.
