.260 Remington or 7mm-08?

I vote 6.5x55..... looked at my options, realised the swedes got it right in the 1890s, that I could buy a good quality gun for $300, went that route.

I guess if I absolutely had to choose I'd say the 260, but it's basically a toned down 6.5x55, so I'm not overly sure why it's so preferred...
 
Why would anyone want a rifle chambered for a cartridge that was less than 60 years old? The two rounds mentioned have very similar performance to, and could easily be replaced by, the 7X57. Besides, how many different ways do you need to drive a 140 gr bullet 2900 fps? That question was answered many years ago.:stirthepot2:

If you simply must have a rifle chambered for a newish cartridge, choose the rifle you prefer in which ever chambering is immediately available. I just wish that a new cartridge did something that hasn't been done previously, or at least do it in a different or better way.

I voted 7-08 but I own a 260, and reload for both cals. It would depend what you are going to do or hun with it. I'm a believer that bigger is better when hunting. I have hunted lots with 243 and as always shot placemnet is alwasys number one. But you susre can tell when something gets hit with a big bullet from a .35whelen ot 338 vs a small cal.,....but all result in dead animals. For taget shooting the ballistics of the 260 with a 140gr bullet are very nice.
6 of 1....1/2 dozen of the other. :)

;)Good point. Getting close and hope I make it;) but I'm not quite there yet:D. If I was more or less starting out or in the initial stages of the game, caliber considerartions and firearms/caliber choices would likely lean more to what's state of the art and available today. That being said, with calibers and firearms I have from days past, it wouldn't make much sence shedding what I have for todays marketing promotions. Not much for me to gain. So, for the time line left for me, I'll stick with what has proven to be 'Time tested and true'.

Check out your local gun club and ask members who have 7-08s and 260s and on some range day ask if you can try them out. Ask them what they like about the 7-08 & .260?
Its just as important to find out what guns you are considering, as the caliber.
I was looking at the new Cabalas catalogue and they list some 7-08s and very few 260s.
