Hey guys quick question. I have my LNL AP all set up to load 124 gr round nose bullets. It is set to throw 4.0 grn of Tightgroup. I just got my 600 free Hornady hollow point bullets, do i have to adjust anything or can i leave it as is to load them too? Looking at load data, it looks like i have to bump up the Tightgroup a little, Hodgdon online says 4.5 to 4.8grn. Don't really want to play with the OAL or anything if i don't want, would love to just adjust the throw. Just curious if anyone has any thoughts.
 
For a hollowpoint you may have to adjust the overall length. The hornady book will give you that, or load a dummy round and see if it strips out of the mag and chambers ok. I know I have to shorten my 45 XTP hollowpoints a fair bit because the curvature of the bullet is differant. I run 4 grs titegroup in all my 9mm target loads.

The loads published relate to the COL's specified. With pistol rounds, changing seating depth & COL can change internal pressures significantly. Not that you can't play with it but just be aware of the situation.
 
thanks HK. I just did up two dummy rounds, the one with the 124grn round nose had an overall COL of 1.13, without touching a thing, i got a COL of 1.10 with the Hornady hollowpoints. I got the powder throwing about 4.5-4.6grns of Tightgroup. I have no access to a chrono, wish i did.. How does this load look?

1.13" is too short. 1.10" is way too short. Should be 1.169" to a 124 RN.
 
I think the .1 might just be the difference between my digital and my Dillon beam scale. As for OAL, I had the owner of Custom Reloading Service come walk me through the initial settings of my press and he said 1.10 is where they run theirs with the 124 grn round nose. I've fired off a few hundred rounds and they seemed fine. Do you think it is too short? I know the 9mm doesn't have much room to play and I don't want any over pressure.

That load looks pretty hot! The Lyman handbook lists 4.2 gn of TG as the maximum load.
I have been using 3.8 gn of Titegroup under a 124 gn lead truncated cone bullet and getting about 1110 fps on the chrony.

Most throwers sitting on top of progressive set ups will vary charges more than that.

Loading bulk pistol bullets is not a "precise" task.

As far as the OAL, and new bullets, especially of a different weight you should cut back the load and work up again.

OAL will vary but you have to adjust the load to compensate sometimes.

A hollowpoint and round nose will obviously have a different OAL and some guns prefer shorter or longer for feeding and reliability.

CZ's are notorious for requiring shorter OAL in 9mm.
 
Thanks for all the replies guys, but now I'm even more confused. :) I will cut my loads back to under 4 grn for my regular 124 bullets. My goal here is just to rip off a bunch of safe rounds, not worried about getting the most accurate loads, just something safe and reliable. So does anyone have a suggestion for a load for the hollow point 115grn including an Oal? Sorry, I'm out of town an all I have is an iPhone. I will be home in the morning and wanted to make a few rounds to test at the range.
 
Thanks buddy, that is the data I was starting with. I will just keep it at 4.5 or 4.6 and make the OAL a little bigger to avoid too high a pressure. Then when I go back to the round nose I will just back the powder back to just under 4 grns.

Sounds like you've got the right idea to me.

I don't reload 9, (only 45 ACP and 38 Sup) so I'm not particularly familiar with 9's. Without a chronograph X, you're really running blind. I'd get one of these on my Xmas list. They're really a necessary tool for reloaders.

Nuff about that.

Generally, heavier bullets and/or deeper seating = lighter loads.
Lighter bullets and/or shallow seating = heavier loads.

I personally find that the longer I can make my cartridges, (subject to their fitting mags and remaining electable), the better they feed. This holds well with theory, by the way, which proposes that longer cartridges = smaller angle of presentation = better feeding. Theories aside, it depends upon what your particular gun likes to eat. What works, works.

Why not try a half dozen dummies (no powder, no primer) that are a few 100ths "longer" than posted max COL. Test em to make sure they still 1) run well in your mag 2) pass the clunk test and 3) will eject when you cycle em. I'd expect such a cartridge would run trouble free and safely within all published load ranges.
 
Chrono is on Xmas list, just told the wife. :) Made it home with all fingers, rounds fired beautifully. Settled on COL of 1.125 and 4.5 grns of Tightgroup under the 115 grn Hornady hollow point. Now off to make a batch, thanks again guys for all your help.

I'm running 125gr Zero Brand hollowpoints with 4.2gr of Titegroup at an OAL of 1.125" with no issues and very good accuracy.
 
Start by seating one of the JHPs with the same die adjustment you have been using for RN bullets and see if the resulting dummy round drops freely into the barrel of your pistol. If so, and the round clears the ejection port, the OAL is acceptable. If not adjust seating depth until it does fit. Keep your dummy round for future reference so you can quickly reset you seating die after using different bullets.

You can use the same data for different bullet types of the same weight as long as you reduce your charges and work up again.
 
I am using 124 gr Berry premium plated bullets ahead of 4.1 grains of Titegroup powder in winchester brass, primed with CCI primers with an OAL of 1.14.

At a recent chrono test, the average of 10 shots was about 1060 which gave me a PF of 131 (good enough for production division).

All have fired and I have had no FTF or FTE with this recipe.

I am VERY new to reloading, but so far this hasn't failed me.
 
How do you like the LNL? It's on my consideration list for replacing my soon to be worn out progressive ("yes dear, I'm sure it's worn out, you know how much reloading I do" -lol) It's either that or the Dillon 650, and since Hornady makes a bullet feeder (and I'm lazy) they're neeck and neck at the moment.
