Skunks

How does that de-stink recipe work on dogs/people?

Yes, just make darn sure you keep it out of the dogs eyes, because it can blind them.... and trying to catch/hold down/rinse out the eyes of a panicking yelping biting dog is no fun. It does really work though.

Make sure you work it into the fur as it's frothing and freshly mixed, seems to work the best. Also, it'll really dry out your dog's skin and fur, so make sure you wash it with doggy shampoo after so it doesn't get flaking skin and damaged hair.

You have way too much experience de-stinking a dog :D

And for the third evening in a row, the skunk is back. I've got an important meeting to attend tomorrow and if he's here when I get home, it's curtains for him.

I have shot many many skunks on our farm, and have never shot a skunk that didn't spray as it was dying. If in a live trap, gassing them with auto exhaust worked to kill w/o spray, but even drowning live trapped skunks made them spray in my experience.

I have to agree. I have shot them in the head, hind end,and with a shotgun, rifle and rimfire and they all sprayed just make sure the wind is right.I have had luck with the water method and one thing with the exhaust method you can usually do right on the spot.

GREAT! thanx for the info. just got a big clumsy lab that likes to get into sh!t

i used to have a 50' rope tied to one end of my live trap and i would clip it onto the quad and drive off towards the dugout and place the trap in it by driving around the dug out.

Must be a significant difference between Manitoba and Saskatchewan skunks!;) I have never had any trouble, as per my earlier post in this thread. (Touch wood!)

I used to trap skunks and was also a fur buyer( so I put up a few). To dispatch a trapped skunk without spraying I'd just mix sardines with some antifreeze and slowly and talking quietly move in towards the skunk and place them so he could eat them. I'd then leave and come back in a while and he'd be dead. The talking slow and moving in slowly usually calms them down enough to enable you to get close enough to drop off the sardines.

You skin them like a normal critter but they have to teats near the anus that are for spraying. You carefully cut around them and then proceed skinning as normal.

To remove their stink mix in a 5 gal. pail:
1 quart of hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp of liquid dishwashing soap
Now you can put the unskinned skunk in this mixture and swirl it around and then rinse it with water and then skin it. But I prefer to put the pulled hide in this mixture, rinse it a couple times and then flesh it afterwords.

I hope that answers your question, if not PM me and I'll try and give you a better answer.

Once you've gone this far, may as well flesh stretch and ship to the fur sale. I saw Furharvester's last auction they averaged $2.09 each with a high of 9 bucks.

I've shot dozens of skunks and can't ever recall one not spraying, to be honest. In reality, they smell all the time. I also shoot every one I see as they're the #1 carrier of rabies in our area.
Another method for "de-skunking" a dog is to use toothpaste, works pretty good.

skunk stink

This is tried and true but you mite not like get to grocery store . Buy box of masingil douce powder put in bucet of water . Swirl critter around skinned of course .eliminates odor. Lots of dead SKUNKS cant be wrong .

Sorry to dig up an old post, but I thought I'd share my skunk experience.....

Last summer I had lots, and lots of holes dug up in my back yard, and knew they were from skunks... I had seen lots around out crossing roads but never in my yard.

This year it was the same thing, so I've been keeping my eye out for them at nite. I have a Rottwieller this year and don't want her sprayed.

So I've kept a 25rd clip handy for my Mossberg Tactical .22 with a red dot scope.

About a week ago at 11pm sure enough at the edge of my treeline 50yrds away, I see a fair size skunk. I ran and got the .22 opened the window on the door and lined him up best I could for being pretty dark out.

Crank off a round... doesn't move, crank off a 2nd round, and he arched his back and tail up and started off into the woods slowly... ( no smell ). So I go running outside flashlight in hand with the gun, and see a second skunk on the edge of the woods to my left... crank off 2rds at him and he went into the woods... then I got a small smell of a skunk, and figured he sprayed...

Next morning I went out ( no smell anywhere ) and I could see one shot hit the grass on the first 2rds, but NO blood. I could see where one shot hit the ground on the second skunk.... NO blood.

I took a little walk to look for them and figured I had missed both... pretty dissapointing really.....

Then today I'm out playing ball with my Rotty, and she all of a sudden smells something and heads right into the woods. I followed her in and BAM there was a dead skunk... First skunk I shot at. One of the two shots connected and he just staggered under a tree. Don't know how I didn't see him last week. NOT a clue where I hit him cause it was dark, and know he was decomposed pretty good, but he NEVER sprayed....

So I'm sure it wasn't the spine or he would have dropped on the spot, or the head.... I think it all depends on where they are hit... He only made it about 20ft.... What a damn mess cleaning that up! I still stink.... lol.

I've still got some holes in the yard, and will surely be keeping a look out for them.... This time I'll load up some CCI Velocitors...

Well tonite at 1130pm or so, my wife wakes me up and says a huge skunk is in the middle of the yard, so I go look, and sure enough a large skunk is there. I go grab the Mossy with red dot and 25rd mag. Chamber a round, line him up and nothing... I'm like wtf... figured it was a dud and chamber a new round. (skunk now is running away) Get the new rd in and nothing... lol, safety was on.. haha....

I go back out at roughly 1am and there he is... digging up my back yard again. So this time I grabbed the gun and made sure the safety was off. Opened up the window lined him up and emptied a 25rd mag on him. He made it roughly 5yrds before he stopped. ( I must admit they are damn tough! )

So the big theory of a shooting a skunk and having it spray is a myth to me because this is my second skunk I have shot this year and it never sprayed. I mean you get a "minor" smell but nothing at all really...... When I go put him in a garbage bag tomorrow I'm sure it will smell, but my yard at this moment doesn't smell at all.

I know I mentioned about cci velocitors.. no good in my gun, jam up. So I stuck with bulk pack of Federal 525s. Work lovely with NO jams.

Well tonite my wife wakes me up again, says there is three skunks in the yard... I grab the mossy again and all I can see in the darkness is two.

I told her once I go outside to nail the lights. I'm outside waiting trying to line the redot up on one, and NO lights..... I finally hollered at her, come to find out that the back lite i burnt out!!!

So I lined the bugger up best I could and started cranking rds again...... dropped it NO problem...

BUT.............. this time WHAT A DAMN SMELL!!! THIS ONE STINKS!

Did alright so far 2 outta 3 NO smell......

This sucks!!!!!!!! MY ENTIRE HOUSE SMELLS!!!!!!!!!

Trust me, it's no myth.

Most skunks we've ever shot back home sprayed full bore. With shotgun or .22 it did not mater. Stinks for weeks.

Preferred method is trapping and drowning or poison once trapped.
