Hello everybody,

I just had a number of questions.

1. Should I buy a Soviet made or a Chinese made SKS?
2. Which store is the best Canadian location to buy an SKS from nowadays?
3. Is the SKS a good rifle for ... well, not a beginner, but a rookie compared to most of you out there?

Thanks a lot, guys.

I would go with russian laminate looks nice and it is a real thing, chinese is also good usually sold as new never fired, around 10$ difference if you buy it from Weimajack on CGN he hand picks all the rifles and u can look at them in he's ads, only problem is you can't pay with cc.. westrifle you can pick a rifle from a catalog, they also hand pick them, and u can pay with cc, badger arms you can't pick them but you can ask for what you want and they hook you up, you can pay with cc, and you can look at tradeex Anthony is good guy to deal with, I would stay away from Frontier Firearms they charge too much and bought a couple of svt40's from them and they were crap...

Who is Weimajack?
Are we talking about a person, a company, here?

Anyways, I wanted to say thanks for the comments... now I believe I have some options to choose from...

Weimajack is a site sponsor, you can find his ads in the EE. As for make, Russian and Chinese military are built on the same tooling, aside from Russian Izhvesk. Westrifle is great to deal with as was Marstar for me.

So far I have bought from Westrifle and Tradeex although Tradeex does not have sks. Both are excellent to deal with and very nice rifles. Westrifle has probably the best selection ,you can get a tula or Ishevsk and you can get 1949 sks .I am not sure but I think they are the only ones with 49,s , and I haven't seen anyone yet advertise Izzy's either,I should have a 49 coming next week just waiting for Al to call with the final arrangements.
Fom what I understand these guys ae ex basketball players fom Russia, cool.

Sorry geo7129 Just realized we got away from some of your questions ,we are like that,I am a relative newbie too but this site is great for info and the members are very helpfull if not opinionated. I only have Russian sks so far, so other members will have to compare the chinese versions. The Russian sks for me has history attached which is appealing to me ,maybe not you ,the stocks seem to be nicer on the Russian rifles even if they have a scratch or two, most of the Russian rifles are refurbs which means basically they were overhauled to original spec.:0) Having said all that .It is appealing to get a chinese sks for $75 when you buy ammo!
The sks is a great first centerfire rifle, very little kick ,cheap ammo ,so you can practise a lot, lots of members alter or add to the sks to make it look more ar,or to make it more accurate, I would like peep sites for mine for that reason.
If this is your very first rifle then a descent .22 cal. rifle would be good also.
Ammo is cheaper and you can get quite accurate .22's for a couple hundred bucks. AND you would not be tempted to buy more sks cause they are addictive!

I would say either russian or the chinese ones that seem to be everywhere right now. Once you get one, you'll want another, then another..... I can stop anytime, just one more...! But seriously, I was surprised at how much I like the chinese sks. Just as good as the russian. Mind you I've only fired a couple hundred through the chinese so far. Marstar is closer to you than most (save on shipping) The one thing I would suggest is dont go overboard on accs. I frankensteined one of mine, and now it just sits in the rack...(I think I'm gonna change it all back) they are more reliable, lighter, and fun just the way they are...

This newb will chip in. From looking around it seems like the Russian ones don't have a chrome lined bore and the Chinese ones do...doesn't a chrome lined bore last way longer?

Wrong, the Russian sks changed over to chrome In 1950/51 I believe, and if the rifle was refurbed some of the older ones were changed to chrome too, also the refurbs mostly got a new laminated stock ,very nice! Either way the steel bores are fine too, lasts a long time!

Late model Russians 55/56 do have a chrome barrel. Oddly the chamber isn't. You can't go wrong with either one. The Russians are nicer finished, especially the laminated stocks. You can still get new,out of the box Chinese SKS.

I have to say you are new to this as many people here know because they read sticky notes ( no offense ) Russians 1949 and some 1950 are not chrome lined. After that all were chrome lined.
Chinese I believe some are chrome lined and some don't.
People that can quote which are is Currton he is admin here.

Cheers,

Ahh yes I should've read the sticky's. I was just going by what some websites said when I surfed around. Most of the Russian ones I was talking about were old. So that would line up. I will have to read more and talk less haha

Don't worry in a few month you will know it all and you will teach new people around here. Especially if you pick up any sks.

Cheers,

Guys, what can I say... such a wealth of information....

Now, I really have to stop and consider everything that was said... you guys really know your stuff around here

One thing is for sure, it seems as though getting an SKS is the cheapest and fastest way for anyone to actually hit the range and start practicing target shooting.

Or should one get a .22 or a 17 HMR caliber rifle first and then the SKS....

You see, guys, the more I think about it, the more I don't know which way to go first rimfire or sks or svt?????

What do you guys think?

OHHH MAN!! Now you opened up a can of worms/Snakes!

Well an SKS is the cheapest centerfire to shoot at the moment and ammunition is easy to find due to all the surplus. This will change over time(several years at least) as supplies dry up.

The SVT fires 7.62x54R which is harder to come by than 7.62x39 and about double the price(or more).

Rimfire will ALWAYS be cheap to shoot and fun to play with due to low cost and not caring really about what you do with each shot.

So pretty much ask yourself which one you'll have the most fun with and get it.

One way or another you'll end up with a rimfire. This is a given for pretty much every firearms owner. If you think an SKS will float your boat go for it as it's a cheap rifle of good quality that is good for hunting as well - do not expect to compete with it, but it's fun to shoot. The SVT is by far more expensive to shoot and I would probably say start with the SKS and get an SVT later if you still want one as ammunition is harder to find and by far more expensive.
