Shotshell buffer question

I am putting together some heavy shotshells using #2 hard shot (Hummasons) and am interested to know at what velocity shot buffer would come into play.
Of course some of the shot becomes deformed as it passes through the forcing cone and choke- I get that, but is there a velocity at which manufactureres begin pouring buffer to reduce shot deformation?

Any useful internet links or thoughts?

From what I have been told velocity really is secondary to the heavier payload. In the lead days there was not a lot of speed but some wicked heavy payload buffered loads like my 2 1/4 oz 10ga.It produces better patterns which is the main reason to use buffer. It stops the jostling and scuffing, as well as eases the set-back when the round is fired. In other words, it helps the shot have a "better ride" down the barrel and decreases shot deformation.

However you can't just add buffer (or any other material) randomly to a shotshell. Doing so can raise pressures enough to damage the gun, or worse. Only use buffer when the loading recipe specifically calls for it and only use the type they call for. Otherwise, you're risking
an undesirable incedent
