Savage 14 Classic or Ruger M77

What's everyone think of these 2? I like the new Savage American Classic in stainless, but the Ruger M77 is of interest as well. Looking at .308 cal in each. Any body know what bolt lift is like between the 2 rifles? Pros / con's for each? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
 
The CRF of the Ruger makes no difference to me, does to some. I like the Savage's safety location on the tang and the detach mag option. Bolt lift is the same with both rifles.
I own a Ruger 77 Hawkeye. GREAT feeling stock, rock solid, accurate rifle. And IMHO it's much prettier than the Savage.
Frankly, the big dividing line for me is the detachable magazine. Some guys hate them, some love them. I think either rifle in .308 Winchester will be a winner.
 
Are you sure the Savage Classic comes in stainless steel? I'm sure it's possible but I've never seen one advertised. I'd go with the Savage or a tang safety Ruger. THE Ruger is more robust with a nice classic stock, nothing wrong with the Savage, great trigger, plastic fore end tip is my only beef with it.
 
I just bought a 114 in 270 and I love it, the fit and finish is top notch. The accu-trigger is by far better than any other trigger I've used. They do come in stainless IIRC.

lebarons in mississauga had the american classic in 30-06 with a stainless barrel. Nice looking gun and felt really really nice in my hands.
 
I own mostly Rugers now, but I have had Savages in the past. Both are excellent rifles.

You have to decide on what kind of action you prefer - controlled round feed (CRF) of the Ruger or push feed of the Savage. Ruger now makes a 308win with a detachable magazine (Scout rifle).

The 308win is a good choice in cartridge - very versatile.

I just got a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in .308 from a fellow CGN'er. I briefly handled one while on holiday in Alberta this summer and as soon as I had it in my hands I knew, just knew I found the rifle I was going to buy.

I love it. Its balanced, light, and the walnut stock has a great feel. it FEELS great in my hands and on the shoulder. I wasn't sure if I wanted to upgrade from my sporterized .303 but what a difference. I'm sighting it in this weekend . If you live near Ottawa come to the Leeds and Grenville Fish and Game Club (Sunday) and try it out.
 
Very interesting - I've yet to handle either rifles. I'm hoping to get my hands on them shortly to make some comparisons - can't wait! I own a savage 93RGV .17hmr with wood stock and think it's a great rifle. I've never so much as even seen a Ruger - just heard/read about them.
 
I've been reading some not so flattering info in the on-line world about the LC6 trigger not being the greatest - in comparison to accu-trigger (don't shoot!). Can anyone speak to this?
 
I've had (have) both, the Savage Accutrigger is excellent! The trigger on a Ruger M77 MII I had was terrible and the bolt rough and would bind at the worst time, when hunting! I sold it. I now have a Ruger M77 - tang model with adjustable trigger, it's a keeper. Both rifles are great, you might have to get the trigger cleaned up or replaced on a Ruger and have the action polished up. I just tried a guys new non accutrigger Savage, it was gritty and must of been about 6-7 lbs. pull. Know what your getting before buying.

The LC6 trigger on my 375 RUger was pretty good- head and shoulders above Rugers previous trigger (although they seem very similar)

It would have worked fine out of the box, (and indeed it did) but I am a bit picky so I still sent it to Guntech to smooth it out.Previous RUger triggers were swapped out for Timneys, and the gunteched trigger does not lack behind the Timneys. If I wasn't satisfied with it, I would have swapped that one out, too.

The new Winchester Extreme weather (or whatever they are called) rifles seem excellent. My buddy bought one and if I was looking for a factory general purpose hunting rifle, that is the one I would choose.
