I was at my local outdoors store yesterday stocking up on expendables for the upcoming deer seasons and was wondering which are the most effective deer scents. There were almost a dozen different brands and types: Tinks, Buck Experts, Almost Steamin', doe, buck, scrape etc.

I've used Tinks, Code Blue and others with varying success. So for my own edification and to help out the newbies what do you think really works and would recommend? I hunt in Manitoba so we can't use natural products - it has to be synthetic. No Tinks 69 instead it has to be Tinks 69-X etc. Thanks.

I have tried the tinks 69 smoking rut sticks. wash hands after handling! Decent success with them. package says to light one then wait for deer to show up.

nice thing is that you dont have to spray anything on you.

I used to use a doe pee from a local deer farm with great success. But Ontario has banned the use of natural scents so only synthetics from now on. I find the way you use them more important than the actual brand, keep your scent from mixing in on the doe pee, and make it as natural as possible, very seldom does a doe walk in a straight line!

While I always use cover scents around me, I also put out wafers with either doe or buck scents and make a mock scape or refresh an old one. But I've used scents that ruined my lunch when I got just a little on my hands to some that smells like cheap after shave (I think that was Code Blue).

I know lots of folks swear by Tink's 69 but they mean the natural stuff not the synthetic. Manitoba bans the use of natural doe pee, etc. I'm just trying to find something that really works. (and not something that may work against me if it doesn't smell right to the deer).

Cover scents are a scam, like those deer whistles you put on your car to scare them away. There is no way you can hide your scent from a deer's nose if it is paying attention.

Attractants can work if the situation is right.

I used the Code Blue buck urine which seemed to work great. They also offer a synthetic buck scent option which would comply with the hunting regs. Have not tried the synthetic yet...

I've found a heavy night of drinking before a morning hunt works great. Rye n coke and grey goose vodka martinis either or works. When I piss on a tree I smell the whiskey and my buddies always ask if I'm awake. I shot 2 deer last fall in such shape. About the comment of deer whistles HA there no use I'm sure the big buck I smoked a month ago heard my truck speeding down the road at 3300rpm with a cherry bomb exhaust if that doesn't scare them off a road a tiny whistle aint gunna do ####. The best scent bomb is coyote piss lock n load bombs. One of those in a car takes months to get the smell out. Not much use for hunting but payback to the guy that oilet papers ur tree stand priceless

jager bombs are equally effective lol

I hardly use the deer scents they havent worked for me I found.

All I use in them earth scent wafers. A month before deer season I wash my clothes and throw a packet in where my clothes are. Cme hunting season and you open the box WHAM a strong smell of dirt!

I have had 3 deer feed all around me and while I was sitting along side a tree stump. Couldnt even flinch with 6 eyes all within 5 yards of me. LOL

I Rub the tinks 69 all over my pants ,hands and Face to mask my scent.it is the best thing out there in that department. The buck bomb is ok aswell except I find it harder to get that off my skin!

I don't find huge differences in using scents or sans the scents.

What I DO know is that understanding and using your wind direction is far more important.

Even making mock scrapes I have seen bucks walk right buy them without a care in the world.

I am however trying to use Tinks all year scent sticks. They kinda smell like cinnamon and apples, I would imagine they are trying to stimulate a fresh food source.

I do have deer come very close to me using these and observing the wind.

I do the same with the fresh earth wafer. I try very hard not to any deer scent on my clothes or hands - I don't want my lunch or my truck to stink of deer pee. LOL. But if it works for you go for it.

Goes without saying you have to watch the wind. I'm not sure if any of these synthetic scent really work, might just attract hunters to the outdoor stores not deer.
