What have people been doing with the recent Stevens and norc compact trapper/backpacker .22s?... Stock irons sights? scopes? peep sights?

The .22 I've used the most this winter... : ) Backpacker, vintage Bushnell 3x compact scope, sling, 2 x CZ 5-round mags. It's been allot of fun, and has functioned flawlessly for such a cheaply-made gun. (once it had CZ mags) I shoot it allot, and give it a 5-6 minute clean after each outing...mostly bolt face, extractors and a couple of patches down the pipe.

I have been thinking bout a stevens in 22 mag to take quading and snowmobiling.

Personally, I think a budget red dot or 1x scope would be ideal. They are very short range rifles, under 50 yds. A 4x scope would be the upper limit on useful scopes. The sights are probably to close together to be used beyond 30 yds.

Do you guys think there is any extra power from the 22mag vs the 22lr in such short 13" barrels?

I'm no expert on ballistics, but I think I can stick my neck out on this one~the .22 mag should have way more punch than a .22lr with the same barrel length.

The biggest problem with the sights on a Norinco isn't how close they are together...rather, how crappy they are to start with. Namely, the front blade. I think Norinco just used their standard JW15 on the shorter-barreled backpacker..so it's way too wide..almost non-functional. I got OK with them on close shots, but realized the gun is accurate enough to warrant some low-power/decent optics. Agreed, 3x-4x is about perfect.

I was thinking a red dot sight as well, but is there anyway to easily mount one on those rifles?

Thanks for the pictures

The .22wmr set-up in the Ruger Single Six easily outperforms the .22LR chambering in the same revolver. That is with about a 6 inch barrel. I think that with more than double the barrel length (and no cylinder gap pressure loss) your .22wmr will seriously outperform the .22LR.

after seeing the second picture i was like, yay another lefty!

but looking at the first picture i am now confused..

.......if it's my photos you're talking about, photo # 2..took a left-handed shot because I didn't want to lean into a snow-covered tree. Leaned on the tree with my right arm to steady myself, and to give a place to rest the rifle.

I just bought a Norinco BackPacker. Love it :D I put a 22 cal. Leopold 4 power scope with BKL- Dovetail rings on it. For $200 plus tax and shipping, I think it came to $242 complete. Scope and other stuff extra ;) I didn't like the Stevens mag release, very cheap. If you check out a posting below "Smoothing Bolt Actions" I have a picture of mine. For the price, I don't think you could go wrong.

I explored this option as well, and in the end decided a youth single shot was the better option.

It was between the Henry and Marlin Youth models, and I chose the Marlin because it was lighter, and didn't have to #### it manually after chambering.

I paid $200 to my door for it, and it is much lighter and about the same length as the Norc.

The stock is obviously short, but manageable for the occasional grouse that pops up on the ATV trails.

It being a single shot doesn't bother me at all, as the grouse around here are so dumb you could practically hit em with rocks.

This was mine for the Norico. It was BSA 2.5 compact Long eye relief scope. Since it became my main back pack rifle, the scope got in the way and I got rid of it. I now looking for a scope that's tiny. The 10/22 has 12.5' Dlask barrel and still makes non-restricted :D.
