I had had a thread going about the FAMAE produced clone of the Sig SG 542 and asked what people thought about it and if they would buy one. Some people took bits of the OP comments on the SG 751 SAPR quite literally and obiviously didn't appreciate my replies...because it has now been deleted!!!

So, let's try this again!

FAMAE FD-200

The FD-200 was based on a semi-auto only version of the SG 542 designed/manufactered by FAMAE as a sniper/DMR style rifle in the early 2000s.

Now, the only non-restricted .308/7.62 cal. military style rifles currently available (that I am aware of) are the Springfield Armory M1A, Norinco/PolyTech M14s/M305 and Kel-Tec RFB. The RobArms XCR-M will probably join the list shortly and the Swiss Arms SG 751 SAPR is undergoing it's review/certification with the RCMP at the moment.

I'd like to see other rifles added to this very short list and was pleased to hear that Tactical Imports is the Canadian importer for FAMAE firearms. They have stated in another thread: "We are working with the manufacturer to produce a purpose built semi-automatic only SG 542 for the Canadian market. We may look into the SG 540 as well, but there are already plenty of 5.56/.223 rifles out there; our main focus in the SG 542 at the moment." This is good news!

I would love to see a version of the FD-200 with a standard synthetic stock, slightly heavier 22" or 24" barrel w/o a flash hider and a "flat-top" option.

What do you think? Would you buy one (in any non-restricted configuration) if it becomes available?

You bring these in and they wil sell and the speed of sale will depend on the price/availibilty and also the quailty of craftsmanship. Also what type of mag's does it take?
Further more post next time 308 cal questions in the Main Battle Rifle Forum as this forum is ment for the 22 cal rifles.

Tactical Imports is the one working on making these available, not me. I'm just curious to know how many gun nutz, like me, want a rifle of this type.

I believe the mags are the of original proprietary Sig design. If we are lucky they will modify the frame/receiver to accept the drop-free AR style mags or go to the more commonly available M-14 style but even if they keep the original it's not that big a deal.

15 years ago I would have posted in the "Main Battle Rifle" section but times have changed and thankfully "Black and Green Rifles" now come in all calibers from the .17 to .50 cal.! Besides the orignal 5.56 "black rifle" has seen more major battle time than these ones! ;)

If reasonably priced I would take an SG 542 in a HEARTBEAT

The FD-200 is ugly as sin but if it would accept the SG 542 butt stock and mags I would take one.

Any sort of estimate on the price? The cheaper the better but any chance it will come in around $2000? (I say $2000 because the SAFs are already $2000 but $1500-$2000 would be awesome).

As I have said in other threads, the barrel of the SG 542 is 18.3" in stock form, add the extra .2" and keep it looking like its select fire brother and I would buy one.

Anything longer, well, I have an M14 with a 22" barrel, I would really prefer a shorter, more modern style firearm. Otherwise, I feel it would be too much of the same.

Why no flash hider? I know it adds length for very little benefit; but it usually means a threaded barrel, and that's nice for wimps like me that like muzzle brakes.

It's a cleaner look and a semi-auto like the FD-200 that weighs close to 11lbs doesn't recoil enough to need a brake.

Any sort of estimate on the price?

I doubt even Tactical Imports could give us estimates at this time, as SG 542 isn't even confirmed to be available yet.

True but with a heavy 22" barrel and no flash hider it would still be almost 3" shorther than a standard M-14 clone. If I was the importer I'd see about making 2 or 3 different versions available (all non-restricted of course) but I'm not, so I too will have to wait and see what happens.

Interesting. I thought FAMAE wasn't interested in selling to civvies, and they weren't happy when they found out their SAF was being sold to civilians in Canada...

Is the SG 542 Prohib? I had asked the RCMP lab about this and the FRT came back with a Prohib status. Now there may be more than one FRT perhaps. Anyone?

It came back as prohib because it's FA or CA. A dedicated semi-only version should be non-restricted with an 18.5" or greater barrel.
