new canadian made 1911

I have ordered one of Canstar's 1911's. it should be about a month before i have it. i dealt with Gerry, the owner andhe was fantastic to deal with. I will post pics and first impressions as soon as I have it. For those that aregoing to the gun show in Montreal this weekend you will be able to see them first hand.

So, are they in house machined from billet slides and frames? Or are they cast or forged in Canada?

Actually the only difference that counts between Canstar and Norinco at this point is that Norinco has shown itself to be capable of delivering firearms to Canadian shooters and Canstar - correct me if I'm wrong, has shown itself to be capable of advertizing that it can deliver firearms to Canadian shooters. Incidently if Canstar can deliver me a 1911 frame and slide (with or without cut rails) made of forged 5100 I'll pay what they ask, I'm pretty sure they'll want more than $350.

I am not sure of Canstar's history... business profile said 2005 I believe, but how long they have been organizing to machine and sell 1911's I am not sure... considering Norinco has been around for a VERY long time, maybe we can cut the newcomer a little slack... I doubt it is a simple process to open shop in Canada manufacturing firearms... miles of red tape.
The response was to a posting that implied that these vapourware pistols, produced by a company with no known manufacturing background were higher quality than the product of an international arms manufacturer that can and has produced everything from pistols to anti-aircraft and anti-ship missile systems. I hope the Canadian company succeeds - but saying that something that doesn't exist is higher quality than something that does exist, due to where the aspiring manufacturer is based is beyond bizzarre, and beyond foolish.
I think too many people here are looking at the maker on their firearms as they take them out of the safe and never go to the range. Too many maker elitists in Canada.Take em out and shoot them and stop the mine is better than yours, its crap.

This is semi-true...when you run thousands of rounds through your guns you get a better sense of which guns actually do stand up, and you figure out which guns actually are better.
Some guns really are better than others. But the best way to determine this is by shooting tens of thousands of rounds, which is expensive and time consuming, so not many people do it.
I'm curious about the Canstar 1911s but I don't know anything about them other than a parts list. Is the parts list nice? Absolutely. Are the parts fitted together correctly? Who knows? I'm still waiting to hear from anyone who's actually shooting one, and even then, with the cost of .45, I am going to be surprised if the first one to break 10,000 rounds happens in the next three years, and the first to break 25,000 will be...who knows when? And that's ONE gun...what is the overall quality of these guns? Total unknown for the forseeable future, IMO.
They're going to have to change the name of the pistol in order to sell many.

They don't have to change anything and can sell tons and make good money, but bottom line is they have to to produce, not dry talking. If 30% of Canadian business run like this, our country will go broke very soon.

I don't think any CGN'er has one. One thing about the Canstar website is that they don't even bother to update it. The S&W 422 that they have listed is sold ages ago and they still haven't taken it down. Maybe they leave it up so people will call them and they will have people to talk to. Who knows.
I rarely look on the sponsors websites for product, I'm sick of seeing "out of stock" or you see something, that appears to be in stock, you call to order, "sorry we are out of stock"...When will you be getting some? "When the shipment comes in". I feel if these businesses want us to patronize them then at least have stock or a faint hint of when they may have stock.Failing that, hire some high school kid to keep their website current. The excuses "we are so busy" "we cant keep up with demand" bull!!! If you cant supply or maintain a reasonable stock of product, dont advertize it and if you do, dont complain when people come on here and whine because their phone calls and emails fall on deaf ears. Been there done that. I dont even check the sponsors on here anymore, I go to my friendly local gunstore, yup, I pay a bit more but I ger service...with a smile and dont get ragged on publicly by the owner when I complain.
.. The Canadian Market is small, very small! Export or wither on the Vine ! Price point will be a big factor, very much so, when it comes to the Canadian Market. ......Hard to compete on an even footing, with the Norincos ! ( Price and availability, if nothing else ) ..... David K
I almost had one,I was probably the first to order in early January.I order a 1911 in 40 s&w he said it would take about three month to finish,so I get a email that my 40 s&w 1911 was ready and I ask for a picture of the gun and it looked very nice.I gave the information he needed to purchase the gun then I get a call the next day that he made a mistake and the gun they built for me was in 9mm and not 40 s&w but he would throw in a compensater for free if I took the 9mm.I said I didn't want the compensater (because I hate the look of it)so I said if you drop the price $150.00 I would take the 9mm even though it wasn't the caliber I ordered three month earlier,he replied that it was no problem and we had a deal.That was about five month ago and I never heard back from him again after many times trying to contact him.That was my experience with canstar arms.
