I'd like to take my son grouse hunting but I haven't hunted game birds in Alberta and I'd like some suggestions about where to hunt. Back east I had a few old logging trails that were great for driving/ walking and we would usually limit out fairly quickly. I live in Calgary and I was thinking about trying the Waiporous area but I would be willing to drive up to a couple of hours to get to a good area if necesssary. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Go west of Longveiw to the forestry trunk road and go south. There are lots of old logging trails you can walk in on and find spruce grouse. Used to do well down that way. You can also go down to the Porcupine hills which is south of Longveiw and walk the hill sides and see lots of grouse there also. You will also see lots of deer in the early fall before deer season. Used to be lots of black bear around there also.

Good advice here. I sent this off to my brother in Calgary who was thinking of grouse hunting west of cowtown this year. tks Raton 57

Careful on the trunk road. I thought I read it in the new regulations that they changed the forestry trunk road designation as a provincal secondary highway. If a grouse pops out on you while you are between cutlines, you can't pop him. I could be wrong, I just skimmed it. Might want to check in more detail.

You are correct.

Last year the trunk road was classed as a secondary highway and on most of it you could shoot a shotgun at a bird while standing on it. Now it is classed as a highway (no secondary or primary any more) so you have to get right off the right-of-way and cannot shoot along or across it.

There are several "road cooridor sanctuaries" where you cannot shoot within 400 yards of the roads center line.

Anybody notice the limit dropped to 5 daily instead of 10. WTF is that about, I've never seen a real shortage of grouse to justify that decision. They are on a seven year cycle from peak to peak of numbers. Who decided to change that and why. (rant)

Yep and they opened the season up on September 1st just about province wide. Longer season in exchange for less birds. Shot 3 sprucies on Tuesday -- too damned hot out for me to enjoy it as much as I normally do though -- always having to find a creek for the dog.

Yea I got 5 ruffys while looking for firewood on the back roads on saturday. Limit filled first day out which was cool, could have got more for the freezer if limit was 10. I shouldn't complain since I am lucky enough to get what I did and have hunting rights to enjoy.
