Got a moose tag and I know nothing

Definately bring a friend or other knowledgeable person. First moose I helped butcher (not my shot, but taken by a first time hunter in our party) fell 30 feet down a gravel cliff after being blasted. Was 8pm by the time all five of us got there, with an ATV and a pickup. We needed every man and every piece of equipment to get that sucker up the hill. Halved the carcass after gutting it, screw keeping the pelt. Still burned out the atv winch motor (cheap CT crap). So we ended up push-pulling it up the hill. Good workout. Made the beer taste better at 2am by the time we got back to camp. Oh the memories.

That sounds like a first-class sh!t show, filled with good memories! :D
To the OP, can you imagine if you were alone in such a scenario?

A heavy duty plastic sleigh. There are black ones about 3 or 4 feet long maybe 18" or 24" wide.

That will save you a heart attack!! Use it on foot or behind an ATV, WAY better than carrying and fighting with huge pieces of flesh and bone.

Bungie cords, tarps and rope are also invaluable tools to have on any hunt.

definately take a pal or two, one important thing to remember is that moose country is grizzly country. when you're tits deep in a moose at 2 in the morning it sure helps the peace of mind to have a buddy standing by with a flashlight and a .338.

Knocked a bull moose (spike-fork) down a couple of years ago while hunting for a mulie doe. Only had a my Kershaw Alaskan Blade Trader on me and length of rope. Did the whole job with it but what a job that was! Try sawing a moose spine full length with a 6" saw blade! It held out and so did I. Packed the whole thing out in quarters. Glad I'm a strong guy in good shape or it never would have happened. Took 8hrs to get it to the truck.
Get a buddy. I won't go hunting for moose without one unless I'm fully geared up, even if do see one come by. Oh and not like just any 'buddy', one who knows one end of a moose from the other (just as the people on this thread have mentioned)!
Best of fortune to you on your hunt!

The bulls will be starting to rut and will respond to a call especially during the last week of your draw. :D

Hopefully the locals behave and don't spoil your trip.

Not to mention it's bloody hot out. Seems summer came late. I'll be going out on the last week in sept.

WHy on gods green earth would you cut down the spine ???? are you going to eat the bone's ? Ever hear of a floating shoulder and taking the hind off at the joint? I don't know why anyone in this day and age would pack out bone ? can't eat it costs more when you take it to the butcher. Take the floating fronts off and the hinds at the ball joint then take the back straps tenderloins and any other good sausage meat you can ! 6 packs max on any big game animal

To the original poster,

Here's a really good guy to help get you started in the art of hunting. Give him a shout! :)

I second that!! Boo was always a great help everytime I've been up his neck of the woods. If I'm ever lucky to get a moose draw there, he's the guy I want whispering in my ear :)

Are you coming up this fall after deer ?

I am on holiday from the 22nd of October until the 30th if you can make that work. :)

Buddy, those dates are definitely on the cards!! I wonder if I can convince the wife to let my daughter miss school too ...now that would be nice :)

I'll confirm things with you as we get closer...remember gotta watch the moon :)

I drew in 5-02C for the first time this year, usually I hunt the Alaska HWY or Vanderhoof. To the OP,take advantage of what people are offering, nothing beats knowledge of the area you'll be hunting.I've dumped a few so hunting a new area doesn't put me off,I've done a bit of research but nothing tops local knowledge. As has been posted be prepared for plenty of work after you pull the trigger.I'm a 60+ cancer patient and I have a fit 30 year old Sherpa coming with me to pack out the quarters!Good luck,Mur

Do you know the area at all Mur? C is a large zone which stretches from the 100 Mile House area up to us here at McLeese Lake. If you are planning on coming up this far North I could point you to a couple of places where I usually see moose. What dates for your draw?

Moose are only as big as the pieces they are cut into.;) Some guys really like to suffer for their moose.

Hi 'Boo,I haven't seen you on the BC boards for a while. We drew for 5-02C because it's getting to cost to much to head up Pink Mountain way nowdays.I'll probably base out of Likely or Polley Lake although nothing is written in stone! We drew the September hunt, the young guy I'm going with has had great success calling in bulls from about the 20th on so we'll head up then and stay til the end of the month if we have to.I'll be keeping an eye out for a 4pt as well,I hear there are some good mulies in that neck of the woods. If you have some thoughts you'd care to share drop me a PM!Cheers,Mur(Gunner on HBC)

My 5-02 "D" bull moose hunt opens tomorrow to the 30th of sept. Area ranges from mckleese lake east to likely-ish and north to quesnel.

My hunting crew are tied up with work so I'm solo. Anyone going up for this draw? Be cool to know if there's any CGN'ers around to help me drag quarters and share some stories with :D
I'm based out of 100 mile house but know the 5-02 D area very well ;)

Give me a shout if you need a hand or just want to BS.

Hi 'Boo,I haven't seen you on the BC boards for a while.

Not much time lately it seems. :( A larger work-load and less staff makes for some long days.

There are some nice mule deer in the area but most -not all ;) - will still be up high. Carry a whitetail tag with you though as you could bump one anywhere. The same is true for wolves. No bag limit where you are going and they are now open 12 months of the year in 5-2. Shoot any you see please. Give me a call if you get over our way.
