Ruger Scout rifle

Yes, I understand that, but why not ship the gun with a 16.5 unthreaded barrel? Why add the extra 2 inches?

Maybe there is another foreign market with an 18.5 inch barrel limit or they wanted to keep the overall length the same......who knows?

My biggest beef with the barrel is not so much the added length, but rather the little bump in the barrel that backs the front sight. I had planned to thread and mount a Troy M1A muzzle break and am not sure how possible that will be.

As for the gun itself, I think it is quite good value for money. It handles well, recoil is quite minimal (several people have noticed this), and I prefer the detachable mag bottom metal to the hinged floorplate (thank God they chose a system with ample mags available, in different sizes to boot). I am in the process of removing the front sight (stuck on good) as I will be mounting a conventional scope (found a NF 2.5-10x24 that needed a new home) and the front sight is just something extra to snag on.

I will probably buy one or two more as my wife likes this one a lot (possibly even more than her Sako 85 syn/sts 30/06) and I am thinking of mounting an aimpoint on one and to keep that as another truck gun.

"Why add the extra 2 inches? "

Well, not that the concept seems to have bothered them much, but the Cooper/Steyr official version has a 19 inch barrel. The Scout is a general purpose rifle, and that has not normally meant a 16" barrel. Threaded would be nice though.

"I've always liked the Scout concept, but the Steyr version is far more than I want to pay for a 'all-round utility rifle'."

It is an all around rifle, in other words the one and only rifle you will ever need. :) It isn't particularly a "utility" rifle. But that said, I know what you mean, particularly when it is much more than 50% more expensive at epps than in the US, and they don't have the right caliber.

I just shot one this afternoon and my best benched group was 1.25'' and 1.5'' at 100 yards with a Leupold 2.75 scout scope and federal 150gr.

I had the idea of scoping her with a conventional scope for my next hunt since I did not beleive I'll be able to shoot right with a scout scope. But to my surprise, after about 20 rds, I become more familiar with the scope. So, I will hunt moose with this setup in 3 weeks!!

I like everything on this rifle exept the mag that is just a little too bulky for hunting, and the price:p. Bolt travel is a little rough but I'm sure it will smooth with use.

Where would one order a five round mag? I asked someone at Epps on the phone the other day and they said it was unavailable in Canada>

I've had the chance to test mine out and it shoots very well indeed. I can't see any real changes other than doing a trigger job in its near future. Sorry but not having a flash hider is not much of a loss in my books.
