SKS - Cosmoline protection?

If you were to store an SKS new in box in an unheated structure in a dry area (Alberta) over the winter (over a number of years), should the factory cosmoline coating provide enough protection to prevent it from rusting? For example, an unheated, detached garage?

If all metal is well covered inside and out, i dont see any protection problem.

If it's well covered in cosmo, no worries. As I understand, the process they used for covering them in cosmo was to just dunk them in a vat, so they should be pretty well covered throughout.

An untreated rifle could eb taken to Krown Rustproofing and sprayed.

If the metal was never exposed to moisture, would you even have to protect it?

Usually if those are covered in cosmoline you military warehouse still looks at it for 3-5 years interval. Cleans it up and puts it back in cosmoline (new)

When we speak about long term storage, using cosmo or grease is the way to go doesn't matter if the gun is new or used. Gun should be cleaned and dry completely and coated inside and out with cosmo or grease.
