BLR saftey....

I think mine is extremely new, however I bought it used(barely) and did not come with any documentation.

Due to the condition of it I would have to assume it is a fairly recent Japan made model.

I am going to go look to check for markings, I will return with my findings.

Mrwire this is the carry condition for the newer(1990s+) , with the folding hammer but ours BLR81 up to early 90s have a solid hammer, and are recommended fully forward carry because there is no direct contact between the pin and the primer. The short pin is just sitting against the hammer under light spring pressure. There may have been a safety issue I'm not aware of, where someone may have had the hammer drug back from rest and slipped before reaching halfcock and causing a firing. If someone is aware of this rare but possible occurance, it would be appreciated to hear about it as I've told the new owner to carry it as I did for 25 years ,...fully forward. Thanks
 
Well looking at it, to me in the fully forward position would not be an issue.IMO just due to looking at the design.

The firing pin and outer sleeve(encases pin) both are under spring tension and the hammer is against the back of the bolt and looks to not be effected at all by an inadvertent strike or knock. The hammer cannot move anymore forward or be able to move the pin if hit.

As for year I would need to decode the serial number I guess.

In the safe position the hammer is a mere 1/8" away from the pin, no where near half ####.
 
Fact No.1 Mine is a 2006

Fact No.2 The hammer at half #### notch is NOT a safety.As per BLR manual on website.

Fact No.3:The folded down position further protects you from accidental discharge.Folded down position prevents the hammer from coming in contact with the firing pin if the hammer is accidentally struck.The dropped hammer position is not a recommended carrying position.

I picked up my pistol grip takedown model earlier this year new so we're looking at the newest version and associated manual.
 
What I find incredible is that Browning is making no mention online about proper carry for the older BLR's. They list an online manual cover 81, lightning, and lite. They state the half #### is only to catch a slip going to full #### and not to be used as a safety, and telling to fold the hammer well if you don't have a folding hammer, what do you do? Seems they have totally ignored the older BLR that is safest carried fully down. Something must have happened causing them to dream up this folding hammer thingy. I'll try to get my '86 manual to quote it. The only logical carry on a chambered round in the older ones like mine is fully down. I read alot of guys in other forums quoting the carry fully down in their manuals, but till I read it again, I won't state it as the rule concerning the early BLR's. The OP of this thread owns an even earlier version of mine , a PRE 81. I believe they have the same inertia pin as the 81 but it's been years since I've handled the oldest ones. In the mean time it's too bad someone reading this thread dosen't have the early 81 manual to quote.
