Hi

I am devloping a load in .223 for long range ( 700y +.... hopefully 1000y.) I know that is a long way for a .223...... but I have already some good result at 700y ( 3 3/8" 5 shots group)

what I'm looking for is more speed

I'm now useing Berger 70g vld bullets with varget but quickload tells me I should get more velocity without too much pressure with blc2

anybody got any experience to share with me ?

the rifle I use is a Cz-527 KV with a 24" 1/9 twist barrel

What velocity are you getting now? In my .223 I used to shoot 75 grain Hornady Amax's at 2930fps. That was plenty to reach out past 1100 meters, accurately.

I don't think you'll be able to turn the .223 into a speed monster, sounds like you have a very accurate load already. Just keep shooting what you do, and add the clicks required to reach longer distances.

my previous group was with Lapua scenar 69g bullet but since I had some issue with those bullet I've swith to Berger

the scenar 69g where traveling around 2900fps with 25g of Varget


I would like to get around 3100fps

what powder do you use?

Send Jerry at mystic percision a pm I sure he will answer your questions about shooting the 223 at long distances.look on youtube for summerland long range 223 one mile.

H322 or benchmark would be better for you.
 
I chronographed 53 grain Hornaday match bullets at 3055 fps using 21 grains of H4198. My primers showed a little cratering with that load. My rifle is the Savage Axis.
 
Velocity does not=accuracy. I would rather have a slower bullet @ 2800-2900 fps that hits the target accurately, than a faster bullets that sprays the target.
 
VT540 & Vt 550 I have driven 90gr Bergers well over 2900 fps with these powders but as Maynard mention accuracy is most important

those powder are way too fast and will make a high peak of pressure with 70g bullet

benchmark can drive 40g Nosler bullet over 38oofps ( my gopher load ) but again according to quick load H322 should push em even more ( I got 2 pound but didn't test it yet...)

the key for high velocity is to use the longest AOL with a high density charge of the slowest powder possible for your bullet weight vs caliber ( quick load is a great great tool..........)

I agree

but usualy a high density load is a accurate load..... F-class shooter most of the time have some realy hot load. (somes are just crazy...)

I'm just working up the fastest load just before it start too spread.

I went to the range today to test the VLD 70g and my most accurate load was with 26.3 of Varget ( over max load don't try this at home)
I was shooting at 200y and I'm recovering from a quad accident with a broken wrist, elbow and collar bone so the grouping where not that great but still.

I've talk to Jerry before ( about my 6.5mm) is the man....
I've order a few time from him and will do it again. that's nice to buy some reloading stuff from someone who realy know what is talking about.

They are definitely not too fast to drive a 69gn bullet....I used to use benchmark to drive Berger 80gn VLD's out of my .223, gave excellent accuracy and speed.

I shoot 26.0 gr of Varget with an 80 gr Nosler. No idea what the velocity is and really don't care, but it does shoot well out to 1000 yards and makes it through the paper target. Hogdon's website tells me it is a full gr over max but there are no pressure signs and the bolt lift is easy even with a Sportco action.

what kind of grouping can you expect at 1ky

and can you tell me more about your rifle is it a custom?

and same here on my super strong mini mauser action bolt lift is the only pressure sign I realy care about!

The rifle is a Sportco with a Neilson adapter and a 30 in 1:8 twist McClennen barrel in an Anshutz prone stock. Iron sights all the way. Brindals on the rear and a Right Sight on the front.

taught about it..... but looks like lots of money for the gain on a 24" barrel!

and my rifle is super accurate ( according to me at least.....) and I don't want to trade accuracy for velovity

but I might be wrong
