Pardon my ignorance about shotgun sports, but in a nutshell, who can tell me the differences between
1>skeet
2>trap, and
3>sporting clay

thank you!

Trap is a game where the targets are flying away from you. Sporting clays is a game where the targets travel in all sorts of directions. Skeet is a game played by crazy people who gather in little groups and shoot at close range targets that always fly in the same direction.

In trap shooting, the shooters stand behind the house, and the targets fly away. The shooting positions are relatively always relatively similar, the trajectories of the targets varries slightly from shot to shot.

In skeet shooting, the houses are placed at opposite ends of the field, and the targets are thrown accross the field towards the opposite house. There are 8 different stations and each one presents a significantly different shot than the one before it. The targets consistently fly the same way.

Sporting clays courses vary tremendously from course to course. Targets come from all kinds of different directions, bounce off of the ground, etc. Several different stations and shooting scenarios are nomrally represented.

Skeet is shot by crazy people that don't mind having clay scattered all over them. LOL

Which is the easiest for a Newbie to get into?

ATA Trap. The rules are easy to learn and you'll be breaking targets in no time. In addition ATA trap fields exist all over the place, from small fish & game clubs to big city clubs with a dozen or more fields. Skeet and sporting clays courses are less numerous.

Sporting is easier to get into. People are nicer, :)

Shoot them all, you will find your niche.

At most, but not all multi purpose clubs, trap shooters talk to trap shooters, skeet shooters talk to skeet shooters, Sporting guys talk to everyone, but no one listens.

Here are the differences among the people who shoot the various games:

Trap shooters are fat, grumpy guys in overalls who spit and scratch themselves at the most inopportune time. They are never more than 27 yards from a Budweiser. They fart.

Skeet shooters are reedy, sissy-like and border on effeminate. They cry often and will have a hissy fit if you don't stand in a perfect straight line behind the shooter during a match. White wine spritzers all around for them.

Sporting clays shooters are usually on steriods, cheat constantly and will try and nail your wife in the back of their SUV between rounds. Prefer bourbon and coke and are often found in a puddle of their own vomit in the parking lot.

FITASC shooters are mostly Europeans who speak several languages none of them fluently. They say words like parcours and chandelle but if you speak harshly to them they will immediately surrender and demand foreign aid. They drink whatever you'll buy them but prefer Calvados.

Did I miss anyone? ;)

Nope I think you covered everyone. Looks like I better get out of the skeet however and start shooting sporting clays with a slight modification .One woman I have is enough and I never puke:D

Can you 'run what you brung' or will you be laughed off the range if you have the 'wrong' shotgun?
At our club you will see single shot Cooeys on the ATA line right along woth high end trap guns, and cheap pump guns shooting with Kriegoffs on the sleet squad.
Most of us could care less as long as everyone is having fun.

Come on now Cat be honest.:p Don't you push just a little harder down on the stock to run them when their is a guy with a Kriegoff in the squad when you are holding a wingmaster. I know I do since years ago I was one of the K gun guys ( nothing against them) but guess what as the years passed I realised it didnot make me shoot any better and it was no fun shooting like a robot. I would say one of the best shooters we have still uses a model 12 with a big old cutts on the end.;) Man does that thing bark
take care

Hey Claybuster, I think you have something there with your analysis of the personal characteristics of people shooting the different sports. In fact, I have some of the personal characteristics of all of the ones you mention. Does that mean I can shoot all of them? Actually, I did an almost perfect hissy fit yesterday in skeet when I blew a straight on station 6...nothing new here of course. It's not easy doing a good hissy fit, even with all of the practice I've had. You'd have been proud.

Don't have to, I can keep pace with my SXS28 for the most part, and sometmes I like to weird out the whole squad with my BP catridge guns!!!!:D
A past U.S. national sporting clays 28 guage champ shoots with us occasionally however, and his K gun was restocked with some of the nicest French walnut I have seen in years - pretty distracting for me when I look at the gun!!
Haven't shot a full round of skeet with a corn sheller for years, although I own a few.

Bring whatever you have. Nobody will laugh you off the range. They may point you to a more appropriate gun depending on the game, but as long as it is in safe working condition, you're good to go.

PS The plus side of bringing the 'wrong' gun, means that they are more likely to let you borrow their 'right' gun, which can sometimes be a treat.
