Compact .22 bolt action setups?

My Norinco Backpacker accepts CZ452 .22lr mags, as the action is a clone of the CZ. The Norinco 10 round mags are the shi**iest mags I've ever seen, won't feed more than 3 reliably. I bought 2 x 5round CZ mags for mine, work flawlessly. Bet the 10 round CZ ones would too.

Got mine at Reliable, a CGN sponsor. ;)

Yeah...they're not giving away CZ mags, but try and make a 10-round Norinco mag work and you'll realize it's the best $50 you ever spent. The one that came with my rifle was a comPLETE P.O.S., even after an hour+ of TLC. (disassemble, clean, polish, lube, re-assemble) Would only feed 3 shots reliably. Bought 2 x 5rd. CZ mags, never looked back. Painful...considering the 2 mags cost 1/2 as much as the rifle, but I have no regrets.

10 rounders can be found here with free shipping and only $37 USD

one way to greatly improve[for me anyway] the regular rear sight is to weld a washer on it,making the notch a ghost ring.

I found that the stevens rusted very fast. Left it in a gun case for a day after shooting, took it out to find surface rust spots all over it. Gunzilla took it off easily, but It still sucked to see.

I'm also wondering if there is enough room to put a red dot on these little guys without having to add a base?

That would depend on the red dot, but I'd guess you could make it work. Most of the red dots I considered req. picatinny/weaver-style bases anyway, so yeah..you might need to consider a base. Might I suggest this nice BKL one;

Would look pretty sweet, I almost went this route on my Norinco, but thought my aging eyes would prefer a 3x scope more. :)

I've long said this about Savage-made rimfires~the finish on their blued guns is pretty crappy. I'm guessing anyone who has used them in the field discovers this pretty quick. In Norinco's favor, I think the bluing is better...BUT, the barrel is a cut-down, standard-length Norinco and the crown is raw metal! I've always been so impressed with the Savage rimfire accuracy that honestly, I don't let it bother me. I'd rather they focus on building great, accurate rimfires for a fair dollar. Truthfully, I'd spring a few extra $ for a better finish.

As for "bang for buck", I think that's totally subjective. I paid $175 for my Norinco in like-new condition, and with a couple of CZ452 mags (+$90) shipped to my door, I would never trade it for the Stevens...even if I could. If it came with an Accutrigger, my mind might change on that.

My 2 hunting rifles I(one rimfire, one centerfire) are both Savages though. :)

EoTech makes 1 just for Rimfire scopes. No need for a weaver base. Ask Wolfgang @ Wolverine for more info.
