Hi all,

I am looking for a .223 for plinking and some small game in the near future. Just wondering what manufacture/model I should go with. Weight ins't an issue as it will be mostly shot at a range.

At first I was going to do the 700 Tactical but then read it wasn't all that good, then I was going to go with a Savage model 25 but then people said it wasn't good, then I looked at a Tikka T3 and I know it's a good gun but it's $100 cheaper at Lebaron then Wholesale sports which is insane as I want to buy this rifle from wholesale sports if possible but not 100% set in stone it has to come from there.

I like Remington because it has been around but I read the gun isn't bedded or barrel isn't fluted or whatever the proper term is. Savage seems interesting because of the accu-trigger and I want a light trigger without having to take it to a shop.

So now I thought I should decide to ask. I have searched and see alot of people recommend the Stevens 200 but I am not one to modify stuff.

Just want a decent .223 with a synthetic stock that is made properly and will last me many lifetimes and not sure what to look at. Budget I guess would be under $800 not including tax but keeping it around $500-600 would be even better as that money would go towards a scope.

:sniper:

Take a look at the CZ. Not sure if they have the synthetic stock, though. Nice guns and very accurate. I have a few in different cals and love them all.

Savage model 12FVSS, is in your price range. The stock is not as good as the synthetic the tikka uses, but the trigger more than makes up for it. The 26" barrel gives that little bit more velocity too to keep your trajectories flatter.

Have a look at the CZ527 - old world quality is still present in this gun. The Kevlar version is difficult to find in Canada but the laminated varmint is around.

Thanks but I am not a fan of CZ for some reason. Yeah my dad was born and live in this country and I have seen them many times when there but I just don't like them.

This could be an option. Looks like a good gun and has accu-trigger. Price is $739 at wholesale which is below my top budget. I think I might have a look at this if they have it in stock.

Any other options? Like is the Rem 700 Tactical a pos?

Without knowing your level of capability or your usage, I would suggest you look at the savage axis. Yes it is an inexpensive rifle, but for informal shooting /varmint shooting, a great buy. With an out of the box 1" or less at 100 yards for less than $400 what the heck.

Yes I am a noob but I have a Savage 111 in a 30-06 and I think its an ok gun in terms of quality but wanted something a tad nicer.

Gonna look and hold the 700 Tactical, 12FVSS, and the Rem varmint when I get to the store and see what I like the best.

Just wanted to get some opinions so thanks

Just for plinking? I like my Savage Axis in that caliber. I know many will disagree, and I know it's inferior to the models mentioned already, but for plinking it'll do.

I just bought a tikka t3 lite in .223 with the blued barrel after going down to wholesale sports and fondling a bunch of rifles. I didn't want to spend too much on a gopher/plinking gun so I was considering a weatherby vanguard in .223 before I went in. Once I got there though I fell in love with the smooooth bolt on the tikka. I haven't had the chance to shoot it yet, hell I don't have a scope yet. Judging from all the reports i've come across though it should be a sub-moa rifle. For a couple extra bucks I feel confident I got a rifle worth keeping. We'll see in a week or two when I go blast some gophers and maybe a curious coyote if I'm lucky.

My son bought a Tikka and I own a Remington Varmint. The Tikka shoots average (with bi-pod), but to be fair, he has not had time to work up a load or two. My Remington is a tack driver. The holes in the target routinely touch. Also to be fair, I removed the tupperware stock it came with as it touched the barrel in spots when the weather got hot. I replaced with a Hogue stock from a local gun shop here. Had to do some dremelling n that one too as there were a couple of spots where the stock touched the barrel.

I own a Savage and a Weatherby Vanguard in different calibers. Both of these shoot exceptionally well too, but not as good as my Remington.

The T3 has a a 1:8 twist so you can shoot longer/heavier bullets. I think it is pretty much the only factory rifle with the 1:8 twist.

Over the past year, I have owned Remington 700 Tacticals in both .308 & .223 - and they both shot very well. :) I'd take one of these over a TIKKA any day.

I don't know why you're insisting on buying from WSS, but I'd suggest you get the Tikka from the less expensive store. Mail order isn't really that bad. My next rifle may very well be a Tikka from Lebarons'

Just because I will only pat 5% tax vs 12% as I will be in the area of the Calgary store tomorrow. No other reason.

Even with the price difference from WSS vs Lebaron, it's a $28 difference after tax and shipping vs picking up in store.

Thats good to hear as I have no read many good comments about this gun for some reason.

I didn't even notice that. I just assumed all stock barrels were 1:9 twist. Thanks for pointing it out.

Like I said, I will go and hold them and play with them and see what I like best.

Nobody's mentioned the Weatherby Vanguard series. I'm liking mine so far. MOA is no problem. And if I remember right it was around $700.00 with case, sling, and mounted Bushnell that I want to replace even though it has been alright.
Another option for ya anyway.
Have a gooder

Somebody mentioned higher in the thread and this will also be on my list of guns to look at. I hear it's accurate, not overly expensive and shoots accurately.

So that means it can't handle the heavier bullet?

No, it won't. Mystic Player is a knowledgeable fellow on the .223 and heavier bullets + twist rate.

The Tikka is nice because it will be fine with the 62 and 70gr bullets which are better than the light bullets for long range shooting. Byt if you are only going to shoot the light stuff, then it makes no difference.
