5kg of ammo

Moe at US customs you just explain that as per airline's policy you have it split between your's and her's luggage IF THEY ASK. don't make this a big deal or any harder then it has to be. Use command presence and voice and don't let them push you around. you don't have to be belligerent just speak with authority.

Last year, I was flying Continental Halifax to Newark and then on to Florida.
Their website said pretty clearly that the ammo did not have to be in a separate bag.
I packed them separately anyway.
At CATSA in the airport, they said, "Ammo in a separate bag?"
I said "Yes, but according to Continental, it doesn't have to be."
Her reply; "It does for us."
She may have been making her own rules, but I really don't have the time or blood pressure left to discuss it with them at the airport when the flight is going to leave regardless.
As they say on the internet, YMMV...

Flying up here to Ontario, (via Porter) I was again reminded at oversized baggage by the CATSA guy that my ammo and gun had to be separate. That letter will be very handy.
I thought it was illegal for an NRA to purchase firearms and ammunition in the US under any circumstances. Form 6NIA allowed you to bring your own ammo into the US and take back out of the US any residual ammo you had left over. I also thought one needed an FFL and an export permit to take ammo out of the US if it originated there. Perhaps your wife has good reason to be nervous.

FWIW - In 20 years of flying with ammo and guns, my ammo has never been weighed.
Secondly, the 5KG rule is an airline rule, not a law - so if you get caught overweight - you piss off the airline and loose some ammo, but you don't go to jail, get fined, or anything else.
Last year, my 4 year old daughter declared 5KG of ammo (to the airline) in her bag going to the monster match. No issues. Your wife has nothing to be concerened with.

Walter, you cannot declare your ammo in someone else's bag. Westjet will sometimes let it slide, but not often. Technically speaking you are not allowed to carry items other than your own in your baggage. So each person declares the ammo as theirs, and then you can borrow it from them later at the match.

When I was flying out to BC for provincials, they Canada security folks asked how much ammo I had when my bags were going through x-ray ... I said 5 kg for me, 5 kg in my wife's bag ... showed both boarding passes and short form declaration, and away we went ... they never blinked an eyelash at the 2 guns in the locked case when I declared them, but were really picky about the ammo ...
Coming back through the Vancouver airport, the airline person asked but the security person didn't even care about ammo ... just wanted to see the short form and asked how many fire arms ...
As already said, just depends on who you get and which side of the bed they got up on that morning I guess ...
