Bought a Remington 597 a year or so ago.
Shot maybe 200 rds out of it.

Decided I should clean it. Bought a new 22 cal brush, but it won't fit in barrel.
Did I wait to long to clean?
Should I put gun oil on brush to lub it?

plug the muzzle and fill it with some solvent, let it soak for an hour or so with it standing muzzle down on some paper towles then try again, don't forget to drain the solvent out before you force the brush down or you may have a bit more mess then you were looking forward to

make sure you got a .22 brush and rod not a .30 cal...

Also if it is leaded, solvent don't help.

Keep ot dry and wrap the bore brush in some strands of a copper scouring pad.

Pushes the lead out in strips from the grooves.

But put the bore brush through a few times to loosen the crap up.

Yeah, the only thing you need to clean occasionally is the action and the chamber. I dont clean my .22 bores either. And if you do i would not push too hard or the rod will flex in the bore and rub down the inside and if you have a cheapo aluminum rod it is actually abrasive and can damage the rifling.

How much clearance is necessary for a cleaning rod? The one I picked up from WSS just fits the bore of my .22, but is too snug to push through with a patch. It inevitably tears the patches before the patches move.

You shouldn't need to clean it after only 200 shots , you've just started to season the barrel if you scrub the barrel now you just have to start over again , that's assuming it's shooting good. You might want to try some Kroil in the barrel if still decide to clean it

if you bought the cheep .22 cleanging kit from wholesalesports thats why you haveing issues. the patches that come inthe kit are too big. you either need to cut them down or what i did was buy .243-7mm patches and they fit much better(imagine that).
this is the kit i am talking about. http://www.outers-guncare.com/products/cleaningkits/aluminum_rodkits.aspx
oh and the aluminum rod will flex and bend ane eventuly break. i shoot a lot but i always clean my guns. invest in a 1 peice cleaning rod

What you can do to start is give a few squirts of Remington bore bright.... that will loosen any crud... not that you should have much after just 200 shots.... this may also help your brush through...

Just a recommendation but I never use aluminum rods to clean my rifles... brass doesn't leave anything in the rifling....

this "won't fit in the barrel" business intrigues me- i have NO knowledge of the 597, but you have to clean a good number of the semi-autos from the muzzle, and it should be a SNUG fit- you'd know it if you bought a 24 or a 30 cal brush- it would be freaking HUGE compared to a 22- there's enough width on a 22 bush to do 223, (224 diameter)
if it's just patches, then try a different brand of patch, and pull it through the jag so that the jag is roughly in the middle- the ONLY time i saw where a bore brush wouldn't fit in a 22 bore was when some gomer WRAPPED THE BRUSH IN A PATCH so he wouldn't have to clean it afterwords- well that whole works got stuck in the bore and had to be burned out

if that's the kit referenced, those are 30 caliber patches- it's ACTUALLY a 30caliber kit, with a 22 rod and adaptor- not a proper 22 kit- most of the so-called "universal" kits are like that- on a 22, just get something like a 22 kleenbore - there's no need to go hog wild and buy something like a dewey or a one-piece rod- and i have yet to break one of the aluminum ones- and that's 43 years of shooting

Just my opinion, I'd buy a bore snake. Works wonders on my Savage and mossberg .22s.
It's quick and no hard rods to damage the bore, crown.

And unless you clean it after every pass, you get to drag the same crud through the barrel over and over again.
