Hey guys

I need your opinion on something. The other day I was cleaning my russian SKS (refurbished). At the end I put some grease on the recoil spring (gunsmith at my shooting range told me it was a good thing to do). After I reassembled the whole thing, the bolt carrier wasn't staying in the open position anymore! After I rechecked that everything was properly reassembled, i finally decided to remove all the grease that was on the spring. This didn't solve my problem so I began to get angry lol. I then started to pull the slide handle and let it spring forward a couple of times until it finally stayed oped like it should normally do...

Can anybody make sense to this?? BTW, this is my first rifle and I had it only for a month so far!

Is the mag all the way closed? The bolt catch is triggered by the follower in the Mag, if the mag is not closed their is nothing pushing on the bolt catch so it wont engage the BCG.

maybe its a bad or dirty magazine spring or follower arm ..? The spring force of the mag is what locks the bolt open .. Did you clean all the cosmoline off every part of your rifle when you first bought it?

Could be the bolt hold open is stock, the bolt hold open spring is junk, could be a lit. A quick easy fix is a slight (I mean slight) bending up of the follower. I have had this with my chinese. It worked and stayed working for years.

Yeah the mag was closed!

I cleaned it the best I could with Varsol (thats what the gunsmith told me to do when I bought the gun). Maybe I should just do the whole process again, this time with boiling water!

Thx for this idea, if the problems starts again, maybe I'll try this!

To be honest S04P I don't know if installing the recoil spring assembly in backwards would cause your bolt carrier to stop locking open or not but it may be something to check.

47) Make sure the coiled end (wavy end) of the recoil spring assembly that has the retainer clip on it is installed into the rear of the bolt carrier first, leaving the straight end of the spring exposed

Thx Norton! Still, the recoil spring was the right way. If it hadn't, I guess pulling the slide and letting it spring forward a couple of times wouldn't have solved the problem...

it doesnt sound like it has anything do to with the main spring .

remove the carrier and look at the back of the mag well , you will see the "bolt hold open" device , now release the mag , it should drop down . if it doesnt then thats where the problem lies , clean that area thoroughly .
