What kinda foot lbs are necessary to put the lights out on a coon. I would like get my dog certified and go try out night hunting for em. Also anyone wanna gimme some good suggestions for high powered air rifle choices I'd appreciate it.

A 22LR sometimes doesn't do the trick first shot! Or second! A hollow point on a FAT coon will sometimes mushroom out so fast that it doesn't reach the vitals before stopping/veering off course. I would not hut a coon with an air gun of any type or velocity. The pellets are too light and don't carry enough kinetic energy to kill humanely.
I also hit a coon in the neck as an entry wound with the opposing side of the abdomen as the exit wound from a 150lb crossbow. A good shot that should have guaranteed a heart, double lung, liver, and gut shot all in one. I was using an expandable broadhead that failed to open properly and pegged him to the barn wall. Poor coon was doing back flips trying to chew the arrow shaft and screaming like hell before I put him down. That's when I swore to NEVER use folding broadheads on anything again or shoot a coon with an arrow! See because only 1 blade opened and the arrow shaft was blocking the entry and exit wound still he couldn't bleed out as intended. Seriously, by a real gun for this. A 22LR with solid bullets or a shotgun.

x2 Saw the thread title "raccoons..." and thought UH Oh! Don't do it. Even a .22lr is a bit iffy unless you get a perfect shot with the right ammo. I've seen raccoons shot 3-4 times with .22s before they bit the dust. Not good. I've never shot one, but I'd suggest at least .22WMR.

I've shot a lot of coons (in the head) with a .177cal @950ft/sec. One shot, one dead coon.
If you guys aren't getting kills with a .22LR, I suggest some target practice.:)
I tried some CB shorts this summer. Works like a charm.

Nothing less than a 30-06, to be sure.

Really, a .22 LR works, it's quiet, cheap, and if you buy the right rounds, effective.

Do some research, I did..
I found plated hollow point high velocity rounds for like $6 at crappy tire, that's all you will ever need.

Don't get me wrong, I've never shot one of the things. I have shot groundhogs (comparable size) with HMRs and .22WMRs where a perfect shot is required, and at 75-125 yards. I've also shot airguns for more than 30 years. In my opinion, I'd say shooting a raccoon with any .177 air rifle is not a good idea. Not saying it wouldn't kill, but for the price of a 950fps, PAL-rated air gun, you also buy a .22lr if raccoon hunting is your thing. I'd still say a .22WMR would be a better choice, but to each his own.

Where the air gun question is concerned~I'd say just because you can, doesn't mean you should. There are PCP air rifles out there that almost rival .22lr ballistics, custom PCP guns~even more. Run-of-the-mill .177 spring piston air guns with exaggerated fps ratings~I wouldn't trust them for the job.

i also agree with the raccon defense thread proposal...you can never trust those sneaky critters...

Yeah, at the ranges you're talking about I'd agree. I like to sneak up on them unawares and shoot them in the head from about 20-30 feet. The best is when you get them up a tree. Take your time, smoke 'em if you got 'em, wait for a nice headshot.:D

I took 3 out of the oak tree in my duck outdoor pen with .22 LR Subsonic hollow points. Headshots, round doesn't exit and all three dropped and did not move an inch. Seems the 22 expanded inside the skull as all three had bulging eye balls almost out of the sockets.

But that was only from 30 ft... and was an easy shot with the scoped 22. I'd go for higher velocity if aiming for longer ranges than 20-30m.

hmmm, so no .22 but I have a 12g and 2 7.62 shorts. (cz 858, sks)

They kill everything at my house.. including our cat last year. our other cat has scars and a torn ear from the bastards.. tried to trap them, but they are smart and they are many.

Ill have to check my hunting regs book to see if I can nail em with my 7.62x39

also I was looking and saw the Gamo extreme .25 cal with over 100 ft lbs

possible?

I use CB shorts for noise control and they work out fine for even big coons. If you can get a 1000 fps airgun your going to do fine as long as you shoot it right.
