What are the types of 22?

22 Long Rifle
22 Long
22 Short

They are all the same diameter bullets and have few differences. The LR and L share the same case but the LR hang around 40gr bullets while the L hangs around 29gr and less powder. That's basically it. The short has a case about half the length of L and LR. Less powder but same bullet. Use the LR, it works. But if you want silent hunting, L and S are quieter and CB caps are only found in these two.

EDIT: scratch that, my Remington Cbees are labelled LR.

Rabbit ammo

As Rabbits are a medium size, you would be best with a high speed, hollow pointed .22 Long Rifle cartridge for a cleaner kill. Most of this ammunition is in the 1250 FPS velocity range, compared to the 1080 FPS range of target ammunition. Within normal hunting ranges for Rabbits, the higher velocity hollow points have adequate accuracy.

x2 There have been lots of .22 ammo options in the last 100 years or so, but I'd say 99.9% of the .22 ammo consumed today is .22lr (long rifle) I'm not aware of a commercially made, modern .22 rifle that isn't chambered in .22lr. Single shot bolt actions will accept shorts, longs, and long rifle, as will many tube-fed .22s.

What you should be focusing on IS .22lr. The widest selection of ammunition options from nasty/dirty cheapo stuff, all the way up to match-grade...and hundreds of options in between.

Have fun and shoot safe!
