Well, I broke down in a moment of weakness and bought yet another CZ-858. As if I need another one :D.

She Who Must Be Obeyed was not amused. :HR:

This 858 came with quite a low price tag and a comment from the seller that, "since he hadn't always cleaned it, there was some pitting in the barrel" - hence the low price. I thought that if nothing else, it would be a parts gun.

I gave it a full regular cleaning - Ed's Red, etc. - removed a fair bit of crud. Rifling appears intact, and pitting is less than expected.

It shoots no worse than my other 858's. For a rifle with a bore in less than first-class condition, operation and accuracy are good.

I'd still like to clean up the bore a bit more. Several people have suggested trying electronic bore cleaning. There are plenty of web site articles, and a few YouTube videos on the actual process. I have an appropriate DC power supply and the rest of the bits, pieces, and liquids.

One thing I'm not sure how about is the best way to plug or block off the gas ports in the barrel. Is it sufficient just to cork the gas outlet where it meets the gas piston tube, or is something more elaborate needed?

Any comments from experience, or advice about preparation for electronic cleaning would be most appreciated. (I plan to start slow and easy, and see if anything useful seems to be happening).

Comments regarding my sanity - or lack thereof - I'll take as a given, LOL.

you could just take the barrelled receiver to any type of processing house that does anodize etc and ask them to give it a good bath. I think you want an Alkaline bath.

Personnally, I use a large piece of soft wax (used to cover cheese) to plug the port hole on an SKS when un-rusting.

Recently, a friend bought an SKS from a CGNer that f***ed him good, the bore was not "rusty", it was completely rusted, I mean it was not only pitted, all the chrome was gone.

My friend asked for my help, so I gave it a good brushing to take out the loose rust and then used a process I learned, using caustic soda diluted in a water bath (1 table spoon per liter) in a window flower box where the action and barrel's length would fit, with a rod down the barrel (like in the electronic bore cleaning process), and plugged with a 6v-12v battery charger, using the 6v setting. 24 hours of treatment later, the barrel is now rustless, and being repolished. Going to shoot it next week-end.
