Just getting into goose hunting and am trying to get this call to sound remotely like its supposed to. All I can get out of it is a low growl that sounds more like a duck or a super high pitched squeek. I've read and watched all kinds of instructions but they all make it look/sound so easy. Any quick tips to help me out? Thanks.

Faulks CH-44 goose call

alright i can not say that it is not good, but a 13$ call is pretty much the cheapest i have seen, altought i saw one 8$ once, anyway, maybe try other calls to see wich one you like, there is a lot of call makers out there...
and buy an structionnal DVD or cd bad grammar is good or 100% all goose by craig mcdonald, i have both and i have found them to be very helpfull, even for the experienced caller,
and next time maybe make a video of you calling so we can pinpoint what it is you are doing wrong...
but again practice practice practice, i practiced 30 minutes every day for 6 months i am not that good...

That call looks like a tricky one. It's mainly for snows, so the pitch will be high. It's a resonat call, the principle behind it is air pressure. Push short bursts of air up from your diaphragm into the the call. When you blow into it try to make a gooo sound.

My recommendation is that you pick up an easy blowing short reed call like a Buck Gardner Canada Hammer and watch some youtube videos on short reed goose calling. Be careful though, it's addictive. Soon enough you'll have a call bag full of expensive acrylic calls.

Thanks for the help, I think I'll order the canada hammer from cabelas. Went to WWS this afternoon to look for a different one and they had very little for selection and nothing that was recommended anywhere online. Is there a difference between Canada Hammer I and II?

if its a knight and hale call you won't be able to make any goose sounds out of it.

I started with a K&H magnum clucker and trust me, with a little practice it will make goose sounds just fine! I killed alot of geese over mine before I started trading calls. I am now using a Band Collector by River Bottom Calls and the birds are responding to it very well this fall. It is probably the most unsung call out there and the best buy in the custom call circuit at just $100 in acrylic and engraved with anything you want on it at no charge. Here is a pic of my first one I ordered back in April.

Wow, those are sharp looking calls, looks like I'll be adding something else to the collection.

I second the vote for a good dvd. many(like bad gramar) are good at showing you the specifics of how, not just the sounds itself. another good one is Jeff foiles(*gasp*) dvd on how to call geese....love him or hate him, he can call 'em.

But...even better is to find someone local who can listen and help. There is nothing better than a live person sitting beside you to listen to what your doing. they also should know how to tune your call...can make a big difference on what sound your going to get out of it.

Also remember this, the guys who make calling dvd's are amazing, they are often champions. You don't HAVE to be this good to call geese. I'm a average caller. I would never ever win a calling championship, im just not that good....but the geese love me :D And thats what counts if your a hunter.

I'll also echo what someone else said, practice practice practice. There is a lot of "feel" to calling and you need to have a feel for your call. even 10 min a day will make a huge difference. When I was first starting to call I would come home from work kick up my feet on the couch an practice while my wife was finishing supper....yeah I wasn't so popular there for a while. :D but it made a big difference....also don't try to jump to the advanced calls to quick. start with the basics, go slow and work your way up.

Good luck!

Holy Sheet I had a revelation today, its a combination of the low raspy sound and the high squeeky sound. Duh. Already annoyed the old lady today but what a wonderful feeling. Still think I'll scare more away and the ones that dont get scared will laugh but I think I'm on the right track. Thanks for all the help.

sounds like you are on the right track. I taught some friend to call this past week end because they sounded like dying rabbits or a wounded goose. I told them to make their one hand part of the barrel and force air through the call to get the whoooo sound. Then give a little more pressure. After they do that they'd learn approximatly how much pressure to make the call break. Then it's just a matter of cutting of the pressure. whooooo-wit. Took them a few tries but they were getting better and sounding like less of a dying rabbit. Now it's just a matter of learning when to call. The only thing I know there is when they lock their wings stop calling or call softer.

Pick up Shawn Stahl's Honker Talk DVD and a easy blowing call like a SMH (Cabelas is blowing them out for $89) or a Giant Killer.

Once you figure it out you will wonder how you couldnt do it before. And if you want some good advice....practice, practice, practice! Remember that in the field no calling is better than poor calling. Make sure you can at least HONK consistently before calling at birds. Also you have to remember that most calling instructional cd's and dvd's are geared towards contest calling sounds. Go listen to real birds and try to mimic those sounds. In the field being able to make 30 or 35 different types of calls usually wont matter. Yes it is good to be able to master them, it feels good to accomplish them. However on a day to day, day in, day out basis if you can cluck, moan and honk you are going to kill birds! Plain and simple! I have hunted in the past with Stahl, MacDonald and a few other pros and I can tell you this, how they call and the sound that comes from the call sounds nothing like how they call on stage.

easy caller

The Primos goose flute is a super easy call to start with. Many of the shorter calls are hard blow well when you are in a blind basically lying on your back. Been my exp anyway. FS
