remington Versa Max

I was just wondering on if anyone this form had one and how it is. I know I can buy the maxus for $60 more. I will be shooting light skeet loads and turkey loads and 3 1/2 I don't want to pay $1300 for a gun that won't cycle them.

i bought one, took it to the trap range and shot 1 oz loads. no issues. went out on opening day for ducks shot 1 1/16 oz and 1 1/8 oz. no problems. even dropped 5 birds. very easy shooting gun.

For 60.00 more to get a maxus why are we even talking. Remington maybe fine but why take a chance when you know the maxus is a super working gun if it fits you..
Remington could not get their 1187 to work properly once they introdeced it to 3 1/2" so what would make anyone think a new model from them would be any better. I probally have 30 plus remington shotguns but nothing after 1983.:) And yes I have a maxus.

Not saying he shouldn't buy a maxus but one reason the versa-max may work better than the 1187 3 1/2" is because it is a completely different gun. We need to hear more from preople who are actually using these guns.

Come on we are talking remington here. I have read many of your posts and think you have been around guns a while.Honestly what has remington made of any true quality in the past 20 years compared to their competition. Nothing I have seen that is for sure. If this was a 500-700.00 gun I would say yes give it a try and it may work out just fine but for this money there are many proven better options. This is a no brainer when going up against a browning semi for 60.00 more. You know it is probally one of the only semi shotguns I have not bought when they came out( almost did but stopped). That and the new mossberg which I am going to buy eventually just to try since it seems OK for the price and reviews are positive.

This guy's review pretty well sums up what I have seen also on the versa max . I have only handled one never shot it.

Went into the local gun shop yesterday and held, in person a new Versa Max. At first glance I noticed the laser engraved "Versa Max" on the receiver was slightly crooked. It appeared to be 1/16 or 1/32 of an inch slanted. It was slight, but noticable. Next I opened the bolt. It has pretty much the exact bolt design as the Benelli. When I pulled the bolt it was very "scratchy". Upon looking into the receiver, I could see all of the machining marks and gouges in the metal. There was even some small metal fragments left over inside the gun from the factory. It did not appear "polished" or put together very well.

I shouldered the gun. It was very front heavy and the balance and aim were just not there. The gun actually felt "cheap" in my hands and I was very disappointed. There is no way I would purchase one of these and I had planned on getting one if the reviews started comming in as positive.

I'm really disappointed in the lack of Remington quality. Growing up I always felt Remington was the nation's greatest gunmaker, and maybe they were. Unfortunately, the quality control has really tanked over the past 5-10 years.

After I was done holding the Versa Max I picked up a Benelli M2. There was no comparison. The M2 felt like an extention of my body, compared to the pvc/lead pipe of the Versa Max. I really think Remington has (had) a good idea with the Versa Max, unfortunately I strongly think it will be a major strike out. For $1,150 I'd much rather have an import. The $650 Beretta 3901 would be a much better and cost saving gun for the money in my eyes. It would prob. be more reliable too (sadly).

Still, because the 1187 3 1/2" didn't work, you cannot compare the Versa Max to it. So the question still remains plain and simple; does the Versa Max work?

No but I can say remington's quality has been terrible in the past 15-20 years in all shotgun models and this one inside looks no different.
I guess you are going to have to Buy one and let us know;)

Nope, not me. I don't plan on spending $1200.00 or more on any semi-auto of any brand. Not when I can do the job at half the cost or less for the shooting I do.;)

By the way, I can give you some first hand reports on the Mossberg 930 but not the 935. 3 years ago I bought a slightly used 930 in walnut for my wife and a new one in synthetic for my dad. They both have performed with no issues and have cycled anything we put through them. They are also easy to clean. I think they are pretty good guns for the money and their intended use. When I bought the new synthetic 930 3 years ago it was $419.00.

4 years ago I bought myself an 1187 in 3 inch. I have shot some "pasture clays" but mostly used for waterfowl. So far it has performed with no problems. I think it was $630.00. So I have no desire (or need) to spend a whack of cash on a new semi. Now if we are talking SxS's, that's a different story.:D

When comparing the Brownings and Winchesters to Benelli and Beretta and Remingtons, please go out and shoulder these guns before you decide. The Brownings and Winchesters fit WAY different than the others due to not as much drop at comb and heel. I bought an SX3 online and got it home and may as well been swinging it like a baseball bat at birds, didn't fit worth a damn!

Speeking from alot of personal experience Browning and Winchester fit alot different than Beretta, Benelli and Remington. Shoulder them before you throw your money away!!!

Shoulder them before you throw your money away!!!

this is the best advice i've read on this thread, you will quickly learn that as soon as you ask about a gun on here theres going to be people that love/hate it and have never held it in there hands much less shot one, your best bet is to go to a gun shop with a large selection and shoulder a few guns, see what YOU like the feel of then talk to one of the people there an ask them some questions, find out what feedback there getting from people who have bought them. But whatever you do don't go out and buy/not buy a gun just because someone on this forum told you to/not to buy it.

The Versa Max does look like an interesting gun! I really like Remington guns because they fit me very well. For $1200 it seems like a nice 3.5" gun when the Berettas and Benellis are selling for roughly $1800. Anybody else ever use the Versa Max and have an opinion on it?

It is interesting how guns fit people. I agree with you on the browning and winchesters which happen to fit me fine and I cannot shoot the beretta or benelli but have no problems either with the remingtons which is interesting and I have a ton of them . You are right try it before you buy it but then buy one that has good reviews.

I own both versa max and browning maxus sporting in carbon fiber, have used both only on skeet and trap fields. I have shot about 1000 rounds with versa max without a single failure and about 1500 round with maxus with no problems also. The only thing i can say the maxus gets allot dirtier after one shoot then versa max does and the spring on maxus is a real pain in the ass to clean. The recoil on both guns pretty much much the same. I would recommend versa max over maxus.

I also own a Versa Max, ran only 300-400 rounds through it tho. Mostly target loads and some waterfowl 3 & 3.5". Couldn't be happier, never jams, and stays quite clean. Very low recoil as well, I would buy one again.

"The Remington Versa-Max auto loading shotgun. Superior reliability sets the new standard in auto loaders. The patented Versa-port gas system cycles all 12 Gauge loads, from 2 3/4" target loads, to the heaviest magnum hunting loads. Shot to shot consistency unrivaled in the world today. The Remington Versa-Max."

^^^^^ I hear this in my ####ing dreams. This is memorized. God is Remington cheezy, putting a talking piece of cardboard on their new shotgun.

i have a versamax in black synthetic....so far it has been flawless i'm shot a number of different rounds through it from slugs.....to steel shot....to target loads....i am however a tad bit bitter that the camo model comes with the turkey choke and mine didnt lol....anyways it is a very nice gun a little bit more bulky than any of the new b guns but still very reliable.

I personally have no issues with the VersaMax ( yes, I actually own one). I bought it because it actually shoulders extremely well for ME. I just can't seem to miss with it! Hearing a lot of Rem bashing regarding the VersaMax but it seems to be from people who don't actually own one (mostly). Funny how they have an opinion on a gun they don't own. Hmmm.... As far as the Remington recall is concerned, when the VersaMax first introduced, only 300 shotguns actually made it out of the factory. Almost all were immediately brought back except for a handful that made it into the publics hands (owners were contacted as well).
There are issues with every gun it seems (if you do your research), it seems I read a lot about Maxus and SX3 issues just as much as Rem issues though as of late I've been reading very little about VersaMax issues (much less than before).
I don't own a Browning Maxus (but I do wear the hat!) or a Win SX3 (I do buy their shot shells). What I can say though, is cleaning the VersaMax is a breeze, points beautifully and I'm happy with it.
